On Sept. 5, the governments of Japan and Australia held a foreign and defense ministerial meeting (2+2) near Melbourne.
At a joint press conference after the meeting, FM Yoko Kamikawa emphasized that "Japan and Australia have shared strategic understanding deeply" regarding the security environment in the Indo-Pacific Region.
The joint statement stated that new support measures, including laying undersea cables, would be created in order to upgrade the communication-infrastructure of the Pacific island countries.
It's aimed to counter China.

At the meeting, DM Minoru Kihara brought up the violation of Japanese airspace by Chinese military aircraft in August, and he said the two countries shared "strong concerns."
The joint statement, it's emphasized that the two countries would "further deepen strategic security cooperation," saying to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
