On June 16, it turned out that the relocation of U.S. Marines in Okinawa to the U.S. territory Guam will begin in December this year, as part of the reorganization of the USFJ.

The program -- as part of efforts to reduce the burden on Okinawa, the U.S.- and Japanese governments agreed in 2006 and was fixed in 2012 -- will finally be shifted into the implementation stage.

According to sources such as U.S. Congressional Research Service, the relocation is expected to be completed around 2028.
Other than 4,000 Marines from Okinawa to Guam, the Japanese- and U.S. governments plan to move around 5,000 to Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, etc.
The III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) and both governments explain that there are nearly 19,000 personnel stationed in Okinawa at most, and this number will be reduced to around 10,000 if the reorganization program progresses steadily.

Okinawa Prefecture, which accounts for only around 0.6% of the national land area, is home to roughly 70% of the facilities used exclusively by the USFJ.
While it's hoped that the relocation of the Marines will reduce the burden, it's concerned that a new burden will be placed on Okinawa as Tokyo has been strengthening its SDF, while taking military expanding China in mind.
Guam is a strategic island in the Indo-Pacific region, and nearly one-3rd of its land area is used by U.S. Forces.
