I have not used the word [国連] in any manuscripts, lectured or university lectures for at least more than two decades.
I always write it as "連合国 (国連)."
When it comes to the League of Nations, of which Japan was a permanent member, translation of "国連" is appropriate. However, even an elementary school student can understand that "United Nations" means "連合国."
