The governments of Japan and S. Korea has started to consider to confirm cooperation in order for realization of the "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)" at the summit meeting on the sidelines of an international conference to be held in Southeast Asia in the middle of this month.
It will be the 1st time that the leaders of Japan and S. Korea to launch their partnership on the FOIP.
Taking the unilateral move to change the status quo in the Indo-Pacific region in mind, they will aim to deepen Japan-S. Korea cooperation beyond cooperation against N. Korea.

Over the FOIP, the leaders of the U.S. and S. Korea have been aligned.
On the other hand, Japan-S. Korea relations deteriorated to be described as the "record worst after the end of WW2 period" due to issues such as the FCS radar lock-on agaist a SDF aircraft during the Moon Jae-in administration.
The Japan-advocated FOIP has been picked up between neither the leaders nor the foreign ministers.
However, in last May, President Yoon Suk-yeol inaugurated, who makes much of relations with the U.S. and Japan.
Therefore, an indication of improvement of the bilateral relations has emerged -- such as that the U.S.-Japan-S. Korea joint anti-submarine military drills was conducted for the 1st time in five and half years, and S. Korean navy participated in the naval fleet review in Japan for the 1st time in seven years.

Taking such circumstances into consideration, PM Fumio Kishida will share the FOIP as a common goal for Japan and S. Korea at the meeting with Yoon Suk-yeol.
In addition to cooperation in dealing with N. Korea, which has repeatedly fired missiles, while taking China in mind, he has an idea to to confirm the importance of building an international order based on the rule of law and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
On the other hand, it's not foreseeable whether or not so-called conscripted workers lawsuits issue will be progressed at the meeting.
As it's in a unclear situation whether or not the S. Korean side will be able to show a solution, that (Tokyo) is coordinating this month's meeting with Yoon Suk-yeol to define as a "short talk."
