Former islanders on Hashima (aka Battleship Island) in Nagasaki City seek dialogue with Prof. Seo Kyoung-duk at Sungshin University, a self-claimed "PR expert" of S. Korea, and storyteller Koo Yeon-cheol.
Both persons are typical examples portraying Korean wartime labor on Battleship Island as "victimhood" in a way different from the memories of the former islanders. Through dialogue, they have therefore intention to clear up the "misunderstandings" that have spread within S. Korea.
In September, they allegedly sent written requests for dialogue through Sungshin University and so on, but they have received no reply.

| He circulated an opinion ads. in NY, but fake information
The entity seeking dialogue is "Hashima Islanders for Historical Truth" (Tomin-no-kai), an organiization formed by around 60 former islanders.
In March of this year (* 2025), the NHK President apologized to the former islanders for the program "Greenless Island," which was thought to have contributed to the spread of fake information about forced labor over Battleship Island.
The former islanders have intention to launch an aggressive rebuttal, in order to refute unbalanced claims that "Battleship Island = Hell Island" as the same as Nazi concentration camps in S. Korea.

For former islanders, Prof. Seo Kyoung-duk has repeatedly disseminated information to the international community that denigrates Battleship Island.
In 2019, he claimed to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that "Japan has not fulfilled its promises" regarding Korean laborers, and called for the revocation of listing of Battleship Island on UNESCO World Heritage.
In 2017, he ran an opinion ads. on a billboard in New York's Times Square to say "Battleship Island was Hell Island."

However, it turned out later that the worker featured in the ads., who was said to be a Korean conscripted worker, was photographed at the Chikuho coal mine (Fukuoka Pref.) in the mid-Meiji period, both the time and location were unrelated to the theme of the ads. Therefore, Prof. Seo Kyoung-duk also admitted his mistake.

| It's pointed out 100% fake talks
Koo Yeon-cheol was born in 1931 and claims to have spent the the during the war on Battleship Island, and has bee active as a storyteller.
While he has claimed that Battleship Island was "a site of the ethnic group's most painful memory," many of the stories he has appealed at rallies and on mass media contradict the testimonies of former islanders. It's therefore pointed out that "almost 100% fake talks" (by former islanders).
Koo Yeon-cheol's existence have allegedly not been confirmed in the island's elementary school roster or in the memories of former islanders.
The former islanders have repeatedly called for dialogue with the two persons, and in September this year (* 2025), they sent new requests for dialogue to Sungshin University and the publisher of Koo Yeon-cheol's book(s).

In a written request to Prof. Seo Kyoung-duk, Jitsuo (* Minoo!?) Tanaka, former deputy director of the Takashima mining station of Mitsubishi Mining Company, which operated the Hashima coal mine, wrote that "Battleship Island is being touted as a [hell island from which no one can return alive] & [slave island]. We have a heavy obligation to continuously protect the honor of our predecessors, who worked sincerely to develop the mine and ensure its stable operation, and the positive image of our precious hometown."
He went on to say that "Incorrect propaganda will inevitably lead to unexpected consequences over time. I propose that we hold a dialogue while respecting each other's positions."

| We won't leave the "Hell Island" label
In a coverage with Sankei Shimbun, Yoichi Nakamura, who serves as secretary-general of Hashima Islanders for Historical Truth, said that "We would like to take what the our counterparts say into consideration and listen them calmly. We think that there may be differences of opinions, but we would like to have open talks," and emphasized that "Our predecessors worked hard and lived on Hashima. They also have dignity. We don't want our grandchildren and great-grandchildren the label of [Hell Island]."
Hashima Islanders for Historical Truth raised \6 million through crowdfunding in September and to make a documentary documenting the procedure leading up to the NHK President's apology.
Before the production begins, it has allegedly intention to want to hold dialogues with both Professor Seo Kyoung-duk and Koo Yeon-cheol.
