The reason why U.S. President D. Trump decisively attacked Venezuela is primarily to dismantle the drug cartel. However, there is one more goal to reform Venezuela's oil industry.
Venezuela has the world's largest reserves of crude oil, but it's heavy and requires advanced technology to refine.
Investment from developed countries is therefore necessary. But President Nicolás Maduro Moros intended to rely on China for that technology.
However, China doesn't have that technology. Venezuela's oil industry is therefore stagnating, and the nationals are exhausted.
Therefore, he wants to revitalize it with investment from major U.S. oil companies, revitalize the Venezuelan economy, and stabilize oil supplies.

On Jan. 3, U.S. President D. Trump released that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro Moros was arrested and extradited from Venezuela.
In its security strategy, the U.S. has adopted a policy of prioritizing the Western Hemisphere (= the Americas), and has suggested that it will not tolerate the rise of dictatorial or authoritarian regimes in Latin America that disregard the human rights of their nationals.
The latest action this time is in line with that policy.
