Penguins at Japanese Aquarium Refuse to Eat Cheaper Fish

Penguins at an aquarium in Japan have refused to eat a cheaper type of fish that was bought for them to help lower costs.

Hakone-en Aquarium in Kanagawa prefecture made the change from horse mackerel — known in Japanese as aji — to a cheaper type of mackerel known as saba. It did this because the price of aji increased between 20% and 30% in May 2022.

A video from ANN News shows the penguins shaking their heads and turning away as staff try to feed them the cheaper fish.

According to CNN, staff have had to get creative to get the penguins to eat the saba. For example, the penguins are more likely to eat the cheaper fish if they have been mixed with aji.

The aquarium is home to more than 32,000 animals of 450 species, including sharks, seals and otters. However, the aquarium's otters also don't like the saba.

The food isn't the only thing the aquarium has had to change to help keep costs low. It has also reduced the number of water circulation pumps from two to just one, lowering the aquarium's energy costs by 40% to 50%. It is also reducing the number of times the filter tank is cleaned.

Staff member Hiroki Shimamoto told ANN News that while the aquarium could increase ticket prices to help with rising costs, it does not plan to do so.

Shimamoto also told Vice News that animals that refuse the new fish will not have to eat them, and will be given the fish they used to eat.
