Wishing for peace - 平和の願い

Today is a peace memorial day.
It's an established anniversary and a public holiday in Okinawa
so that the government offices and schools are closed.

今日は慰霊の日です。
沖縄県が制定する記念日、
沖縄県では、沖縄の官公庁や学校関係など休日になります。

What is the memorial Day?
Many died in Okinawa during the World War II.
It's the day when the war ended here 
so that we send prayers for those victims of the war
and wish for peace.
慰霊の日とは、
第二次世界大戦で多くの死者を出した沖縄。
戦争が終息した日。として
戦争で犠牲にあった方々に祈りを捧げて平和を願う日。

In advance to the memorial day in Okinawa,
schools conduct peace learning activities such as 
listening to some stories from those who experienced the war.
沖縄では慰霊の日の前に
学校でも戦争体験者の話を聞いたり

平和学習を行います。

As the days have passed and the number of people 
who have experienced the war has decreased,
with a will to "let the war never happen again"
and not to forget the sadness of that time
those who learned by listening to the stories are now 
carrying out activities to tell the stories.
月日が経ち、戦争体験者も減ってきていますが
「二度と戦争は起こしてはいけない︎」
とあの時の悲しみを忘れないように
沖縄では、体験者が少なくなっている今、

戦争体験者の話を聞いて学んだ人が、

戦争体験者の話を伝えている活動も行っています。

My father was born as a twin and 3 years old at the time.
My father’s family was told by Japanese soldiers
"If you get caught, we never know 
what American soldiers would do to you
so if they come your way, 
make sure you kill yourself before getting caught."
then a grenade was given to them.
私の父は双子で当時3歳でした。
当時、日本兵からは、父の家族は
「アメリカ人に捕まったら何されるか？分からないから、

アメリカ人が来たら捕まる前に自決しなさい。」
と手榴弾を持たされていたそうです。

When American soldiers came to the cave shelter 
where my father was hiding,
my uncle, my father's twin brother was having a nap
at the entrance to the shelter, fortunate enough 
knowing it was a civilian shelter, 
the American soldiers did not attack them.
父がいた防空壕にも　
アメリカ兵が来た際に
父の双子のおじさんが防空壕の入口で
お昼寝していた事が幸い。

民間人の防空壕だと知り、アメリカ兵は攻撃をしてこなかったようです。

It was also fortunate that the cave was pitch-black and 
no one could find the grenade that they were supposed to have.
また、真っ暗な防空壕の中で
持っていたはずの手榴弾が見当たらず。
自決出来なかった事も今考えると運がよかったです。

After that, my father and relatives were taken 
from the shelter to the camp so their lives were saved.

その後、父や防空壕にいた親戚は、収容所に行くことで

命が助かりました。

Thanks to my father's survival,
I was born on this earth.
父が生き延びたおかげで
私はこの地球に生を受けました。

"Life is a treasure" "Nuchidu Takara (in Okinawan)"
So I will send my silent prayer at noon
for those who lost their lives in wars and 
wish for no more war.
No more war and
peaceful world!
「命は宝」「ぬちどぅ宝」
二度と戦争が起きないように
戦争で犠牲になった方々に対して
正午に黙祷をします。

二度と、戦争がない

平和の世界になるように！
