2016年12月20日、イギリス王室が2016年4月で90歳になったイギリスのエリザベス女王の公務を縮小、２５団体のパトロンから退くと発表。
パトロンは、社会的意義のある活動や団体を支援。啓発活動や寄付金集めを後押ししており、各種慈善団体のパトロンを務めることは、英王室の伝統でもあります。
女王は、現在、慈善団体や福祉団体など、600以上の組織の「後援者」となっていますが、「セーブ・ザ・チルドレンUK」や、テニスのウィンブルドン選手権の運営団体「オールイングランド・クラブ」など25団体について、「名誉総裁」などの役職を、別の王室メンバーに引き継ぐそう。
王室は、エリザベス女王の夫、フィリップ殿下が、90歳になった2011年に公務を縮小したことにならったものとしていて、今後、数カ月かけて、引き継ぎを行うとしています。

２５団体には、ラグビー協会のほか テニスのウィンブルドン選手権を主催する「オールイングランド・ローンテニス・アンド・クロッケークラブ」や、国際支援ＮＧＯ「セーブ・ザ・チルドレン・ＵＫ」、自転車競技連盟、土木研究所、ホロコースト追悼記念日トラストなどの名誉職が含まれます。
これらの団体のパトロンはキャサリン妃やハリー王子らほかの王室メンバーらが引き継ぐが、女王も引き続き約６００団体のパトロンを務めるそう。
イングランドとウェールズのラグビー協会の名誉総裁は、孫のヘンリー王子とウィリアム王子がそれぞれ引き継ぎます。
