The Competition was tough. Last March we asked you to select your favorite Oscar-winning actress form a list of 60 that began with Janet Gaynor in 1927 and went through Hilary Swan in 1999. Audrey, who won her statue for 1953's Roman Holiday and was nominated four more times, took the title( followed by Katharine Hepbuurn).
Born May 4,1999, in Brussel as Edda(var. Edna) van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston, Audrey was sickly war refugee as a child, so hungry she ate tulip bulbs to survive, Trained as a ballet dancer, she went to become a model,actress, and finally a star---all by he mid-20s. Among her best known films are Sabrina, The Nun's Story, Breakfast at Tiffany's (perhaps her signature role), and My Fair Lady.
Married twince and the mother of two sons, Audrey spent her later years touring the world for UNICEF. She died of cancer January 20, 1993, at her home in Switzerland. "My career," she once said, "is a complete mystery to me." But it wasn't to those of us who watched and loved her.
