Unless someone has been through the experience, it can be difficult to fully understand what it's like for returning veterans trying to re-establish themselves within their communities and homes.

For this reason, a $250,000-a-year commitment by BlueCross BlueShield of Western York to create a one-stop veterans outreach center with satellite sites is significant. The "Helping Our Heroes" announcement came the other day, along with the company's promised $250,000 cash and in-kind contribution.

Alphonso O'Neil-White, president and CEO of BlueCross Blue Shield of Western New York, has continued his company's support of veterans, engaging labor and private industry. As he correctly stated, many Western New Yorkers have put their lives on the line for freedom. It's only right that there be support systems in place when they get home.

So, too, was it fitting that he made the announcement outside South Buffalo Post 721, American Legion, on Cazenovia Street, and across from the Cazenovia Resource Center, which will serve as the first satellite center for this initiative. titleist ap2 710 irons

Referencing the success of the Veterans Outreach Center in Rochester, a great example of collaboration, the Buffalo outreach center will someday represent a place for returning veterans, active and reservists, to receive services ranging from mental health, housing, education and job training and placement.

Chris Kreiger, an Iraq veteran who was injured while serving, started the nonprofit WNY Heroes and is adept at bringing the message of veterans to the public. A one-stop center is so much better than trying to navigate a system, which is the power of this concept. It started with Kreiger's vision, working with Rochester.

Many veterans are in desperate need of the range of services an outreach center could provide, which include health and wellness screenings and information about benefits.

It's heartening to know that there are a number of partners in the continuing effort to take care of our veterans. Now, it's time to build on that momentum by giving them a place to find hope.
