Mrs Wilkins Checkweigher was bound to know about the new baby. She had her eye at the letter box and knew everybody's business, almost before it happened.
When she opened the door she said with a chuckle, "You've got another rival, eh!" She was fat, and her apron belt, tied tightly round her middle, made her bulge out in two places like a big cottage-loaf. She shuffled round the door and thrust the jug in front of me. I said politely, pretending I hadn't heard, "Nice morning, Mrs Wilkins." She watched me intently as I poured out the two half pints of milk to see that I gave the full measure..
"Keep your hand steady now, or else you'll be spilling the milk on my clean doorstep. What's her name?" I straightened up too quickly and spilled a drop of milk from the second measure.
Replica Corum Watches "She hasn't got a name yet," I said quickly, "I haven't seen it either. It was born at three o'clock this morning and it's supposed to be like our Mary who's staying with my Auntie in the country." "Oh," she said, moving her feet back and looking at the doorstep.
She was surprised at the flow of words, as I meant her to be. "And how many does that make in your family now?" I rattled the measure back on to the handle of the can and made ready to go: "Don't know. There's one more girl now at any rate." "Don't know! What do you mean? You don't know how many in your own family, boy! You ought to be proud of so many brothers and sisters. How many would there be? There's Rachel and Tom and you and David and Arthur and your two sisters staying with your Auntie and the new one.
Is there another?" I picked up the can and started to walk towards the gate, edging out of the corner in which she'd pinned me.
"I'm in a hurry, Mrs Wilkins."
She looked at me curiously, shaking her head as I escaped. But she suddenly became agitated, and just as I was going out through the gate she Replica Zenith shouted loud enough for the whole street to hear: "Wait a minute; you didn't give me my last measure full." I'd forgotten about the milk I'd spilled. As I poured out the extra drop she said, clicking her tongue: "Well, well. You're a fine one.
You in standard five - or is it six? - and don't know how many in your own family!" I made my way quickly into the street. An empty tin was lying on the pavement and I gave it a kick sending Glashutte Watch Replica it flying over to the other side of the road.
To Hell with Mrs Checkweigher!
