TARANAKI'S journalism course may have been saved from an early grave by unprecedented numbers of enrolments.
high tops shoes saleThe writing had been on the wall all year for the two- semester Witt diploma after only a handful of students enrolled for the course and then only two passed.
As with any programme at the polytech, the journalism course was then assessed by a consultant who recommended it cease because of low numbers.
However, since the assessment the course has had 22 applications and 11 enrolments.
Salvatore Ferragamo Shoes Head of the arts, commerce and technology faculty at Witt Christine Pritchard said although a formal decision had yet to be made, things were looking extremely positive. "All programmes go through peaks and troughs - it has a lot to do with public perception. It also depends on which jobs look sexy," Mrs Pritchard said.
She thought the amount of publicity about newspapers closing could have affected the previous years' numbers.
It wasn't a reflection on the quality of the course or the tutors, Mrs Pritchard said.
Journalism tutor Robin Martin said he liked to think the high level of enrolments was because of the course's good reputation.
"I'd like to think it is recognition from students that the course is worth doing."
Nike Air Force 1 Mid He said the students had published a lot of stories during the year and that was part of the course's attraction.
"It's extremely hands-on," Mr Martin said.
