The roof of Zojoji Temple in Tokyo was re-covered with titanium tiles, reducing its weight to about one-tenth of that of the original roof. This significantly improved its earthquake resistance and durability.

In 2007, as part of its renovation, the Middle Golden Gate (Hōzōmon) of Sensoji Temple became the first in Japan to use titanium-formed roof tiles. The new roof reduced the weight to about one-eighth of the original.
