1904 proper young ladies like Samantha wore dresses covered with frilly aprons, high button shoes, and long stockings held up with garters, even when they were playing.

The elegance and comforts of 'proper' life in 1904 were possible because there were many servants to do the work.
Servants worked long days for little money. To grow up in such a changing world was often confusing, but it was always exciting.


American girls シリーズは、主人公の女の子達に強い意志が感じられてとても面白いです。フラフラに生きている私。もう少し頑張らねば～～

A to Z Mysteries

ミステリー好きだからと薦められた本です。
"A to Z mysteries"というとおり、ＡからＺまでのシリーズ物らしいです。
口語表現が多いので、話し言葉が得意な人にはいいかなぁと思いますが、口語表現が多すぎて私はついていけませんでした～
読んでいて眠くなって眠くて眠くて・・・
８章からやっと面白くなり、そこからは一気に読めました。

気になった表現は・・・

"I'm so sorry I missed the book signing."

"The cat's out of the bag now, sis," he said.

これは二つともラジオ英会話（これは、毎日ちゃんと聞いているんです。テキストを年間購読していますから～＾＾　本当はもっと復習も必要なんですけどね）でも出てきた表現なので、「おぉっ！」と思いました。
"I'm sorry I missed that."は覚えておくと使いやすい表現ですね。「見逃して残念だよ～。」

"cat's ~"の方は使いこなすのはなかなか難しそうです。「秘密がばれた」という意味です。

有名なアガサ・クリスティーの生涯を簡単に短く書いたものです。
「伝記」というジャンルを普段あまり読まないので、構えて読み始めましたが、結婚の話や小説が売れるまで等の話もあり興味深く読めました～。

これを読んだ後、アガサの小説がどうしても読みたくなってしまい、図書館にエルキュール・ポアロ（Hercule Poirot）とミスマープル(Miss Jane Marple）の小説（日本語翻訳版です）を借りに行ってしまいました～。
一緒に借りたコナンドイル（Conan Doyle）の「ドイル傑作集」が思った以上に傑作でしたホームズは英語でも読みたいなぁ。
エルキュール・ポアロの方は面白かったですが、日本語の訳し方もクラシックでクラシック調の分に慣れないと物語に入り込めなかったのがちょっと残念です。英語ならまた違うのだろうなぁ。「ポアロが韋駄天走りをした」とか書いてあるんですよ。イギリスが舞台なのに～人物がたくさん出てきて、内容も複雑で筋自体は面白かったのですけどね。

虹色の女の子

表紙の女の子の絵がとても印象的で、思わず借りて読んでしまった一冊です。意外と文字数が多いので、読み応えがありました。

表紙の女の子が、ある日突然体中がストライプになってしまいます。ストライプになっただけではいざ知らず、色々形が変わったり、もっと体が変な色になっちゃったり、いったいどうなっちゃったの


お医者さんがたくさん来て、女の子の症状を調べるシーンがあり、医学用語（といったら大げさですが・・・）がたくさん出てくるので勉強になりました。

"Are you having any coughing, sneezing, runny nose, aches, pains, chills, hot flashes, dizziness, drowsiness, shortness of breath, or uncontrollable twitching?"

"It's not the mumps or the measles."

"Definitely not chicken pox or sunburn."

"It might be a virus. Possibly some form of bacteria."

"It could be a fungus."

"These might be the trick. I thought so."


"sneezing"（くしゃみ）、"runny nose"（鼻水）、"chills"（悪寒）は、覚えておくと便利な表現ですね＾＾
特に子供はしょっちゅうrunny noseです。

The Library

本の大好きな女の人Elizabeth Brownの話です。「図書館」というそのものずばりのタイトルにも惹かれました。私も図書館が好きなので。
"Elizabeth Brown…"という文章が多く、音のリズムが良く読みやすいです。水彩絵の具みたいな色合いも素敵です
