土佐清水市ではほとんどの人が英語を使えます、それは、およそ１００年前のジョン万次郎の
貢献によるものです。
万次郎は１４歳の時、漁に出て遭難、無人島に漂流、１４０日後、アメリカの捕鯨船に助けられ、
船長の養子となり、大学卒業後に、金を掘り当て、６０００ドルを持って１１年ぶりに故郷え帰って
きました。
その後は、公の通訳、開成館の教授、等の仕事のほか、ABCの歌や、ネクタイを広めたりする
一方、貧しい人々に施しを したりと、地元に尽くしました。
現在、その功績をしのぶ為、女性の有志が作った「ウエルカム ジョン万の会」というグループが
あり、その活動の一つとして、「ジョン万カルタ」という、英語と日本語の両方で遊べる、いろは
カルタを作りました、今では子供から大人まで楽しんでいます。
行政も、海外留学の支援も行っていますし、民間もホームステイの受け入れ態勢も万全です。
万次郎の子孫の方は、今でも、養父だった船長の子孫の方と交流があり、その市と、土佐清水市
姉妹都市となっています。
アメリカの子供達にもジョン万次郎は人気があり、その伝記「ハートオブサムライ」は１２万部売れ
ており、教科書にも使っている所もあるそうです。
Citizens speak English well
At the end of Edo era, In Tosa Simizu city in Kouchi prf. the people there very interested in English and they started to learn English.
Why they were interested in English so much?
Because Tosa Simizu is the birth place of Jhon Manjirou.
He contributed many things from America.
Since after world war 2nd the city government has supported students
for studying abroad and recently citizens accept about 170 home stay
students from America in a year.
And now most of people can speak English, for example, workers in
small stores, restaurants and also walking around can reply to foreigners
in English.
More ever there are lady's volunteer group called "Welcome Jhon man"
They made two kinds of cards named [Jhon Man Karuta], thoses are
written in English and Japanese.
Children and adults enjoy playing the cards, sometimes in English and
sometimes in Japanese.
People in that city are very proud of Jhon Manjirou.
That's why they can speak English easily.
Adding, the book [the life of Jhon Manjirou] is popular among pupils in
America as the book [Heart of Samurai], it's sold 120,000 till now, and
also it's used as a text book.
If I could have a chance, I'd like to play the Jhon man Karuta.
