In Australia it is called cutting down the tall poppies (my theory is that a history of island isolation helps create these similarities). オーストラリアでは頭角を現した人たちをいとも簡単に排除してしまう傾向がある。日本で「出る釘は打たれる」というのと同じだ。オーストラリアでは「丈の高いケシは刈られる」という。（私の説では両国に共通する“島国根性”がこうした類似をもたらした、ということである）。

Terada was chief editor at the literary magazines “Literature” and “Sea Swalow” and he was responsible for publishing such writers as Masuji Ibuse. While chief editor at “Sea Swallow”, he sent Banana Yoshimoto, Yoko Ogawa, Masahiko Shimada, Kazumi Saeki, Mitsuyo Kakuta, Eiko Matsumura and others into the limelight one after another. How did “Sea Swallow” find so many budding writers? I once thought that was strange, so I traced the story. Anseiです。 昨年の１０月３１日に行った講演のアンコール版といった感じですが、今回は時間が８０分と短いので、内容も引き締めていこうと思っています。前半は私が考えている「英語教育の問題点」について語り、シェイクスピアの朗誦を行いいます。Henry V、マクベス、十二夜の他、今回はHamletの有名なTo be or not to beのくだりを追加する予定です。話の内容はトヨタ問題などの時事的なものを加えるつもりです。後半は学生を使った腹式呼吸と発声の実技を行います。これまでの英語教育では全く触れられていなかった領域なので、前回も英語教師のあいだで反響がありました。その結果、６月１８日に大正大学で大学院生に「英語教育の問題点」と「翻訳の問題点」について、１年生には上記の「腹式呼吸・英語の発声と発音」について特別講義をすることになりました。

Good news is discounted. Pessimism is trendy. Growth is too feeble to help real people. China’s copying culture exposed by song theft The PR song for the Shanghai Expo turned to be almost identical to a hit song by Japanese singer-songwriter Mayo Okamoto. After the scandal was uncovered, the event’s executive committee belatedly contacted Okamoto’s side and asked for permission to use the music. The Chinese side apparently wanted to settle the matter amicably. The organizers did not file a protest at the plagiarism by the person who “composed” the song. They did not admit to and apologize for the copying. Nagamine has always shown her sympathy for the poor, oppressed including the wandering artists. Her inner self resonates with their sadness, pain, bitterness and pride. Her every movement, every pulse of heartbeat is full of love for those people.
Jongara, the new production, will delve into the root of her passion, her inner self. Yasuko Nagamine was born in Aizu-Wakamatsu City of Tohoku district―northern part of Honshu. Historically, Tohoku has always been a district oppressed by the ruling power. In ancient times, as the embodiment of Jomon Culture expelled by the newly coming Yayoi Culture. Later as the land of Ainu against the western Yamato. Then like the Heike Clan leader Taira-no-Masakado fleeing with his brow pieced by an arrow. As an snow-stricken land of famine compared to the rich western region. As a land providing poor young women sold for the rich. Such history may no longer be valid nowadays. However, if you peel the skin of the heart of the indigenous people one by one, you will find that a dark and bitter passion is still running there. Yasuko Nagamine―Presentday Riverbank Beggar ―is none other than the incarnation of this Tohoku spirit.
Jongara, a music form, is said to have developed from a music genre called “Shinpo-Koudaiji” handed down by the female blind wandering singers called GOZE.. The blind female wandering singers, snowstorm, a troupe of women trudging along in the coldest season of the year, their shabby inn with a thatched roof, their gloomy faces under the candle light in a room with a wooden floor, indigenous people who came to listen to their music revealing only shining eyes under the dim light, singing that starts with a strum of Shamisen lute, rounded backs of the listeners, their unaffected tears―all this conveys a rich atmosphere of the life of GOZE. Their music developed with the help of Tsugaru-Shamisen lute into a unique style, a mixture of strength and compassionate feeling. Though this new style of music is different from the original, still retains the basic feeling of the indigenous people.
This production could be taken as a story told by GOZE at a dark room with a wooden floor in Tohoku in front of the indigenous people revealing only shining eyes under the dim light, or perhaps a fantasy.
Friends: I didn’t expect to write this summer about our tall Gekka Bijin cactus plant, whose blossoms burst to life at midnight and die at sunrise. I’ve written extensively about it before. But the succulent exploded last night with five times more blossoms than we have ever seen, so I got out my camera and put on my writing cap. "Glory" is attached.
