ヤッホー。
Hey guys.
この数日間、福岡はすごい大雨だ。
Torrential rains have been pounding Fukuoka over the past few days.
今日は、子供の学校は大雨による休校になった。
It’s so bad that school was called off today.
夜中の雷は恐ろしかった。
The thunder and lightning last night was prettyscary.
日本語で「雷」というと、“ゴロゴロという音”も“ピカッと光る閃光(せんこう)”も、どちらも文脈により表すけれど、英語では音と光を分けて表現する。
雷の音はthunder、 雷の光(稲妻)はlightningです。
In English, we call kaminari thunder and lightning. “Thunder” refers to the sound, and “lightning” refers to the light. In Japanese, thunder and lightning are often lumped together as kaminari.
順番は、バリ大事だ。lightning and thunderは絶対に言わない。
The order is super important. You would neversay “lightning and thunder.”
[胡椒塩] は言わないと同じ感じ。
Just like you would never say “pepper and salt.”
thunderもlightningも、名詞でも動詞でも使う。
Both words can be used as both nouns and verbs.
