Morning.
最近、毎日ニュースで[検討する] という表現を聞く。
These days, I hear the term kento suru everyday on the news.
辞書で調べると、英語のconsiderは出てくる。
If you look it up in the dictionary, you’ll find the word “consider.”
この英語は、まあ、[考える] の意味に近いかな。
It’s very close to the Japanese kangaeru.
色々考えた後、決断が出るって感じ。
Kinda like you’ll make a decision after thinking about it for a while.
けど、色んな日本人に聞いてみたら、[検討する] は考えない、考えたくない、やるつもりない、などの意思を示す時もある、とわかった。
But when I asked a lot of Japanese people, many of them told me that this word sometimes means “I'm not gonna think about it,” “I don't wanna think about it,” or “I don't wanna do it.”
それか、[まぁ考えるけど、すぐには無理だ！]
Or, I'll think about it, but don't expect an answer anytime soon。
Twitterの人たちに聞いてみたら、こういう答えがきた。
When I asked people on Twitter, this is what they said.
どうですか、皆さん？
What do you think?
人によって、意味が違う？
Does it depend on the person?
場合によって、意味が違う？
Or the situation?
ちなみに、英語では少しに似たような表現がある。
By the way there’s kind of a similar expression in English.
それは、親が子供に言うI’ll think about itだ。
That is when parents tell their children “I'll think about it.”
多くの子供にとって、これはあまり希望がないような表現だ。笑笑。
Most kids don't have a lot of hope if their parents say this to them. Lol.
いずれにせよ、言葉はバリバリ面白い。ある表現の微妙なニュアンスは、いつも辞書と教科書には入っているとは限らない。
In any case, language is fascinating. There are so many subtle nuances that cannot be found in textbooks or dictionaries.
でもそれは悪いことじゃなくて面白いことなんだ。
But I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
その微妙なニュアンスを楽しもう！
