Morning.
朝から、スポーツのことを考えている。コロナの影響で、スポーツをしている人の姿は殆ど消えた。
プロ野球やサッカーの開幕は延期になったし、子供たちは部活もできない。
I’ve been thinking about sports since this morning. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s been awhile since I’ve seen people playing sports. Pro sports like baseball and soccer have seen the start of their seasons postponed, and kids have been unable to play sports at school.
早くできるようになって欲しいなあ。
More than anything, I hope we can find a way to play sports again.
野球⚾️が大好きなアンちゃんは、早く野球をみたい。
安全にシーズンの開幕ができるなら、して欲しい。無観客で全然いい。
I am crazy about baseball, and I can’t wait to watch it. If it be done safely, I really want the season to start. I don’t even care if it’s without fans.
スポーツが始まると、みんなは少し元気が出ると思う。
しばらく、今までと全然違う形でする必要があると思うけど、とにかく、見たい！
I think that seeing sports again will make us feel a little more alive. They will have to be played radically differently than they have been up until now, but that’s totally fine with me. Please give me sports back!
コロナ休校の間、毎日、ソフトボール部🥎に入りたい娘とキャッチポールをしよる。
2ヶ月間で、娘は、バリうまくなった。私は、ずっと前からうまいけどね。笑笑。
I’ve been playing catch with my daughter almost everyday since school’s been out. She wants to be on the school softball team, and man, she’s gotten good in these two months. As for me, I’ve always been good. Ha!
コロナに負けない！
最近、この表現をよく聞くよね。
You often hear this phrase these days,
けど、これを英語で言えると？
But can you say it in English?
今日は、スポーツが大好きなアンちゃんは、勝ち負け用語を教えるね。
Today I’m going to teach you about how to talk about winning and losing in English.
さて、始めよう！
Ok, let’s get started!

[彼に勝った！] と英語で言えると？
So, do you know how to say kare ni katta in English?
私の学生の殆どは言えない。必ず、
Most of my students don’t. They usually say..
“I won him” と言ってしまう。今日の授業でも何回も聞いた。
“I won him.” I even heard it in class several times today.
けど、正しい英語は、”I beat him” です。”I won him” と言うと、何かの賞品が当たったようなニュアンスがある。
The right way to say it is, “I beat him.” If you say, “I won him,” it’s like you won a stuffed animal at a carnival or something.
それか、他の女性の取り合いになっていた彼氏は、一時的に浮気したけど、自分のところに戻ってきた。
そういう時、”I won him back” という。
Or, it sounds like you got your man back after he left you for a while to be with another woman. After he makes his way back to you, you say, “I won him back!”
けど、何かの勝負の時、[彼に勝った！]
と言いたかったら、”I beat him” という。
But in some kind of game or competition you say,
“I beat him.”
同時に、[彼に負けた] は。。
If you wanna say the opposite, you’d say...
“I lost him”じゃなくて、
“I lost to him”か
“He beat me”
と言います。
もし、”I lost him” と言ってしまったら。彼を失ったの意味になる。彼にふられたか、彼が死んだか。
If you say “I lost him,” it sounds like you either lost him to another woman or he died.
やばい。ドラマチックしすぎ！
Geez, sounds super dramatic.
試合の時の、勝ち負けは。。
But if you are talking about a game, you’d say...
“I won the game!”
“I lost the game!”
じゃ、ブログの冒頭に書いてあった、[コロナに負けない！] は何という？
So then, how would you say, korona ni makenai?
“It’s not gonna beat me.”
“It’s not gonna get me down.”
“I’m not gonna let it defeat me.”
“We are gonna beat it.”
様々な言い方がある。
There’s many ways to say it.
けど、これの方が聞き。
You’d hear this more often though.
“We will get through this.”
[負けないで、きっと乗り越えるよ！] みたいなニュアンスだ。
I will not lose to coronaは、言わないね。

ちなみに、同点や引き分けは、tie, drawです。
By the way, when neither team wins, it’s called a tie.
試合は同点で終わった。
“The game ended in a tie.”
“The game ended in a draw.”'
競争心が強いアメリカ人は、同点で試合を終えることが納得できない。
マジ吐きそう。何時になっても、どんなに疲れていても、誰かが勝つまで、プレイする。同点は許さん。笑笑。
Ties make competitive Americans wanna throw up. No matter how long it takes, or how tired the players may be, somebody has to win. No way anyone will accept a lousy tie.
私のキッズは、バリバリ負けず嫌い。誰かが拗ねるか泣くか。そういう人は英語で、sore loserという。
My kids totally hate to lose. Somebody always w-inds up crying or sulking. In English, that person is called a “sore loser.”
負けず嫌いは、someone who hates to loseという。
負けず嫌いっていいけど、拗ねることはマジ嫌い。躾しないかん。
A sore loser is not the same as someone who hates to lose. The latter is admirable, the former unacceptable. A sore loser needs some discipline!
He hates to lose! (ポジティブ)
He’s a sore loser! (ネガティヴ)
次、勝負って、なんという？
Lastly, how do you say the Japanese shobu?
パリパリ訳しにくいんだ。
It’s a pain in the neck to translate.
意味は、両チームは同じくらい上手い (下手) やけん、面白い試合になる。
The meaning is the teams are well-matched. They are as good (or bad) as each other.
やけん、match, good matchup, or close game を使おう。
So let’s use match, good matchup, or close game.
勝負は同点となった。
The close match ended in a draw.
阪神対西武はきっといい勝負だ！
Hanshin vs. Seibu is gonna be a great game!
Hanshin and Seibu are a great matchup.
この二つは大丈夫だけど、人対人になると、
This is cool for teams, but when you are comparing two people you say...
うちらはいい勝負だ！
I can give you a run for your money!は1番いいかな。
けど、ニュアンスは微妙に違うなあ。
ネガティブな意味もある。
There’s a negative way to use it too.
うちらはいい勝負だ！2人とも英語がバリ下手！
Hey I wonder who’s worse at English, me or you?
It’s close!
最後に、勝利は、victory
敗北は、defeat
なんか、書き始めた時、これは簡単だ！と思ったけど、やっぱり、難しいね。
英語が難しくて、申し訳ないバイ。
