人間がコミュニケーションをとる方法は、たくさんある。
There’s a lot of ways to communicate.
言葉、文字、表情、姿勢。そして、ボディーランゲージ。国によって、使っているボディーランゲージやジェスチャーが違う。アメリカと日本との違いは、マジ半端ないって！けど、今回は1番イライラさせる日本のボディーランゲージについて話したい。
Spoken words. Writing. Facial expressions. Posture. And then there’s body language. Body language and gestures vary from country to country. I mean, just the differences between Japan and America are huge. Today I wanna talk about one Japanese gesture in particular that drives me totally nuts.
イライラさせる？いつも寛容なアンちゃんが、日本を批判すると？
Drives your crazy? Could it be that the always tolerant Annechan is criticizing something Japanese?
うん。これだけ勘弁して欲しい！
Yeah, give a break just this once!
アンちゃんをバリバリイライラさせるボディーランゲージに、私は名前を付けた。
I have a special name to this gesture.
[日本人の頭傾斜] 。
Japanese Head Tilt
本当の日本語は、首をかしげること。けど、頭傾斜のほうがおもしろくない？やけん、このステキな単語を勝手に作った。笑笑。
I know there’s a real word in Japanese but mine is much better.
小さい子供が1番するけど、老若男女問わずに、これをする。
All Japanese people, from the young to the old, are guilty of it.
私はブログに、相当 [老若男女] を使いたかったから、使ってみた。バリ幸せ。
Geez, I really wanted to use that word in my blog. I’m a happy woman!
とにかく、私がイライラする日本人の行動は、誰かに何かを質問された時によく使う、ボディーランゲージだ。
Anyhoo, this annoying gesture by someone
responding to a question.
頭をゆっくり左に傾けて、無口になる。そして、フェロアップの質問されたら、ゆっくり右に傾く。
The head is moved slowly to the left in a diagonal motion while maintaining silence.
日本人の頭傾斜は、様々な時に使われている。
The Japanese Head Tilt is used in several occasions.
1. わからない時。
2. 別に意見がない時。 (なんでもいい)
3. 意見があるけど、言いきらん時 。
4. 答えたくない時。
1. When you don’t know something.
2. When you don’t have an opinion.
3. When you do have an opinion, but you can’t bring yourself to say it.
4. When you don’t wanna answer.
言葉で生きているアンちゃんは、このわけわからん無口の答えを我慢できん。数年間前まで、うちのキッズもよく頭傾斜をした。ある日、両手で娘の頭を持って、真っ直ぐにした。そして、「言葉を使いなさい！！」と叫んだ。お母さんは、クレイジーになっとる？と思ったかもしれんけど、頭傾斜の限界を超えていた。
As someone who makes her living through words, I can’t bear the silent Japanese Head Tilt. Up until a few years ago, my kids were perpetrators of it too. But then one day, I grabbed my daughter’s tilted head with both hands and straightened it up. I screamed “Use words!” They probably thought Mommy had gone a bit looney, but I had reached my Head Tilt limit.
私のキッズは、今はそのボディーランゲージをしない。
Their head tilting days are over.
まあ、文化の違いがもちろんあるけん、その違いを納得せんと。日本人の親は、どう思ってるかな。私と同じにイライラしているのかな？このボディーランゲージは、どんな文化でもコミュニケーションの妨げになると思わん？
Well, I understand that cultural differences abound and of course I respect that. But I wonder if Japanese parents get annoyed with the Head Tilt too. Don’t you think this Head Tilt will interfere with communication, no matter what language you speak?
とにかく、日本が好き。
日本人が、永遠に頭を頭傾斜をしても大丈夫！日本に対しての愛情は変わらん。
ただ、我慢の限界を超えたら、両手で知らない人の頭を真っ直ぐにするかも。
Still, I love Japan like crazy. Even if they Head Tilt till the end of time, I will always love them. But there is a chance, a small chance that I may one day grab the head of a head tilting stranger and straighten it up. If I do that, forgive me, ok?
