最近、「感謝」という言葉について、よく考えている。友達と「感謝」について話したり、あるいはその事について、新聞の記事を書いたりもした。まず、「感謝」っていう漢字が好きすぎてたまらん。最近、日本人と同じようにいろんな漢字を書くようになったけど、「感謝」という言葉は忘れられない。「感謝」の漢字を忘れないことはもちろんいいことなんやけど、それよりいいことは、「感謝」の気持ちを忘れないことだ。アンちゃん、良いこと言ったやん！って言いたかろう？でも、そう。人間はいつも感謝の気持ちを忘れずに、生きて行かんと、私は思う。
These days, I have been thinking a lot about the concept of gratitude. I talk about it with my friends a lot, and I even wrote about it in my newspaper column. To begin with, I love the kanji character for "kansha" Just like most Japanese people, I am finding myself forgetting how to write more and more kanji recently. But for some reason, I never forget how to write the kanji for kansha. Of course, not forgetting how to write the kanji is nice and all, but how much more important is it not to forget our feelings of gratitude? Wow, that's deep! But seriously, it's important. Humans must walk through life never forgetting to be thankful for all we have.
最近「有り難い」も気に入っている。「有り難い」の意味は、「感謝」の漢字と同じぐらい好きだ、マジ。「ある」ことは「難しい」けん、感謝の気持ちをずっと持たないと。先週、友達から「有り難い」の反対語を教えてもらった。言語的な反対語かどうかわからんけど、気持ち的に、「有り難い」の反対語は「当たり前」だ。そうやろう？何かが、当たり前だと思っているなら、感謝はしない。やけん、今日は「感謝」「有り難い」「当たり前」の英語表現を教えて行きたいと思う。さて、始めよう！
I have also been into the word arigatai. I seriously think I like the meaning of this word almost as much as I like the kanji for kansha. In English it sounds kinda weird, but the translation would be, "having anything is hard." With that in mind, you have to be thankful for all you have, because nothing in life comes easy. Last week, my friend taught me the opposite of arigatai. I am not sure if it is linguistically truly opposite or not, but it sure is if you see if from the viewpoint of attitude. She taught me that the opposite of arigatai is atarimae. It's true, right? If you take something for granted and assume it will always be there, the natural result is to lose the attitude of thankfulness. So today, I am going to teach you how to express the Japanese terms kansha, arigatai, and atarimae in English.
「感謝」は英語で thankfulness, gratitude, appreciation という。
「感謝の気持ちをずっと持たないかん。」
You always need to have an attitude of gratitude.（直訳にすると、よくないけん、これがいい。しかもattitude of gratitudeの響きはバリバリ素敵！
動詞にすると、The verbs would be...
be thankful, be grateful, appreciateという。
お母さんにめっちゃ感謝しよる。
I'm really thankful for my mom.
感謝してます！
I really appreciate it!
私のために色々してくれて、本当に感謝してます。
I'm really grateful for all you've done for me.
I really appreciate all you have done for me.
I'm so thankful for all you've done for me.
感謝の気持ちがない時、これを言う。
You are ungrateful.
日本語は、英語の「to」と「for」はあまり区別はしない。例えば、
Japanese doesn't really differentiate [to] and [for] as clearly as English does.
神様に感謝します。I am thankful to God.
それがあることに感謝してる。I am thankful for that.
英語では、to を言う時は、与えてくれた人を示す時に使う。forを使う時、そのものがあるから感謝している。例えば、
I am thankful to God for my family.
家族を与えてくれた神様に感謝している。
「有り難い」は、感謝と同じように訳してもいい。
本当に有り難い！

ちなみに、I really appreciate it とか I really appreciate you は英語でバリバリ使う。絶対に覚えとって欲しいなぁ。

So, what is the best way to translate atarimae?
「ね、あなたは日本語を話せると？」Hey, can you speak Japanese?
「当たり前！」Of course!
似たような文書を見てみよう。
「ね、野球が好きと？」Hey, do you like baseball?
「当たり前！」Of course!
この二つは全く同じように見えるけど、マジ気を付けて欲しい。この「当たり前」を間違えて使う人はたくさんいるからさ。
These two sentences may seem exactly the same, but man, they sure aren't. I really want you to see the difference because many people use them incorrectly.
もしね、日本人に、
Hey, can you speak Japanese? 「日本語が話せると？」と聞いて、
そして、答えは、
Of course! 「当たり前！」だったら、全然大丈夫だ。だって、日本人は、日本語が話せることは当然なことなんだ。（最近の若者はどうかな？笑笑。）
けどね、もし、その日本人に
Hey, do you like baseball?（野球が好きと？）と聞いて、
そして答えは、
Of course! （当たり前！）やったら、マジ危険だ。何故かって、知っている？
私が、あなたは野球が好きかどうか、全然わからない。やけん、聞いている。だから、もし、
I have absolutely no idea whether you like baseball or not. That is why I am asking. So....
「当たり前」だと答えたら、意味は、
If you answer, "Of course!" the meaning becomes....
もちろん野球が好きよ！あなたは何で知らんと？バカやろう？
Yes, you idiot! Of course I like baseball!
というニュアンスが入っている。やけん、聞いている人が、あなたは野球が好きかどうかわからない時に、一番いい答えは、Yes, I do!! だ。
So, in this case, if the person asking has no idea if you like baseball or not, just answer, "Yes, I do!!"
私はアメリカで、よくこういう会話を聞くことがある。アメリカ人は留学生に、Do you like...?と聞いた時、その留学生は、元気よくOF COURSE!!!と答えた。マジ危ないから、気をつけてね。
I saw this mistake so much when I was in America. An American would ask an international student, "Do you like..?" and the student would say, "Of course!" It is not a good idea to answer like this, so let's be careful!
もう一つの「当たり前」の使い方は、
There is another way to use atarimae.
「それを当たり前だと思わないでくれ！」だ。
これを英語で
Don't take it for grantedという。この表現は英語で良く言う。
例えば、
Don't take me for granted.「私が、色々してあげることを当たり前だと思わないで！」
Don't take your parents for granted.「親がすることを、当たり前だと思わないで。！
You are taking me for granted!「私がしてあげていることを当たり前だと思っているけん、全然感謝の気持ちを持ってないやん！」
わかった？この表現は英語でよく使うけん、覚えたら、バリバリかっこ良く思われる！最後に、このブログを読んでくれる読者にバリバリ感謝しよるバイ！当たり前だと思ってない！
