先月、私は４４歳の誕生日の記念に、１３個目のピアスを開けた。多能的なマネージャーのマキコさんが開けてくれた。ただ、開ける前にちょっと時間がかかった。だって、耳にはそんなにスペースがないやん！色々検討した上で、左耳の耳たぶにした。ピアサーを使ったことがなかったマキコだけど、なんとかキレイに開けることができた。まぁ、最初に途中までしかピアスが入らんかったけど、二人で押し付けたら入ったバイ。私は痛みに強いけん、可哀想だと思われんくていい。実は、私はまだ自分のお母さんにピアスのことを言ってない。何歳になっても、お母さんはうるさいからさ。仕方がない。それはお母さんの大事な役割なんだ。
Last month, to celebrate my 44th birthday, I got my 13th ear piercing. My versatile manager, Makiko, pierced it for me. But before she actually put a hole in my ear, we had to scope out the remaining space--there wasn't much! After a short discussion, we decided on the upper back part of my left earlobe. Even though Makiko had never used a piercer in her life, she was somehow able to put a pretty nice hole in my ear. Well, at first the earring didn't go all the way through, so we had to push it through. Yeah, I take pain pretty well. Of course, I haven't told my mom about my new addition. No matter how old you get, your mom is always on to you about something. That's life--that is one of Mom's most important jobs.
日本語の「ピアス」は、和製英語って知っとう？英語では、pierceという単語は存在するけど、動詞でしか使われていない。例えば、「耳に穴を開けた」と言いたい時は、"I got my ears pierced." 英語がうまい日本人でもここでつまずく。I pierced my ears と言いたくなる。もし自分で針やピアサーを使って穴を開けたなら、それでもいいけど、誰かに開けてもらったら、I got my ears pierced を言わなあかん。兎に角、日本語の「ピアス」は英語で earring か piercing という。日本語のイアリングは、穴が空いていない時に使うもの。それは英語で、clip-on earrings と言う。言葉は面白くない？
Did you know that the word piasu is Japanese English? In English, we use the word "pierce," but it is only used as a verb. For example, if you want to say mimi ni ana o aketa, you would say, "I got my ears pierced." Even Japanese who are good at English stumble over this one. They will often say, "I pierced my ears. If you actually pierce your own ears with a needle or piercer that is fine, but if someone else does it for you, you have to say, "I got my ears pierced." Anyway, if you want to express the Japanese piasu in English, you would say "earring" or "piercing." The Japanese word iaaringu is "clip-on earring" in English. Isn't language awesome?
もう一つ似ているようなミスはよく聞く。「髪の毛を切った」と言いたい時に、I got a haircutと言うね。私は、何回も学生からI cut my hairと聞くけど、この表現も「自分で髪の毛を切った」という意味になる。あなたは、自分の髪の毛を切ったことがある？私はしたことがないけど、私の子供は何回もはさみを持って、自分の髪の毛を切ったことがある。ヤバイ。はさみを隠さないかん！
There is another mistake that I often hear. If you want to say kaminoke o kitta in English, you have to say, "I got a haircut." Many, many times I have heard my students say "I cut my hair," but this implies that you cut your hair yourself. Have you ever cut your own hair? I haven't but my kids have. Man, what a mess. I gotta hide the scisssors...
私が、自分の髪の毛を切ったら、多分すごいことになる。一回も自分で切ったことがない。一回友達にブリーチしてもらってけど、それも絶対に自分でせん。ちなみに、私はブリーチをしすぎて、自毛の色がわけわからんくなった。何色やろう？産まれた時、赤やった。で、どんどん金髪になっていった。日本に来た時、茶色くなりかけの金髪やった。日本に長く住めば住むほど、どんどん髪の毛は黒くなった。何でやろう？水？食べ物？染める前に、黒い根っこがでている。バリバリ黒いんだ。心だけじゃなくて、見た目も日本人になりかけって嬉しいバイ。私は、めっちゃくちゃケチな人なんやけど、髪の毛には、お金をかけるね。洋服は殆どリサイクルショップで買っとるけど、髪の毛はしっかりしているサロンで切ってもらったり、染めてもらったりする。面白いね。人間は、人によって価値を置いているところが違う。私のお母さんは、絶対に１万円も髪の毛にかけない。やけど、いつも頼りができる新車を買う。私は、ずっと現金で中古の車を買っている。
If I ever cut my own hair, it would be a total disaster. I have never in once in my life cut my own hair. Once, I let my friend bleach it, but I would never attempt such a thing on my own. By the way, I have bleached my hair so many times, I am not sure what my natural hair color is. Hmm...when I was born, it was red. Then it turned blond. When I came to Japan twenty years ago, it was a kind of dirty blond. I have found that the longer I live in Japan, the darker my hair gets. What the heck? Is it the water? The food? Before I dye it or bleach it, I can the see the roots coming out, and they are seriously dark. It is pretty cool that not only my heart is becoming Japanese, but my hair, too! I am a total cheapskate, but I spend money on my hair. I buy most of my clothes at thrift stores, but I won't skimp on my hair! I find it interesting how different people will spend their money on different things. My mom would never spend 100 bucks on her hair, but she always makes sure she buys a nice, reliable new car. I always buy used cars with cash.
