Man, this is a great word and everyone should know it--especially if you have little kids. Nah, if you have kids of any age you need to know it. There is no perfect Japanese word--you need a different word depending on the context. I guess the closest would be the Japanese mechakucha and chirakatteiru. "Mess" is a noun, and "messy" is an adjective. Let's take a look at some sample sentences.
"What a mess!!" （アンちゃんは、この文章を一日３回くらい言う。( I say this about three times a day)
「何、このめちゃくちゃ散らかっている部屋？！動物園じゃなかろう？」っていう意味が入っている。
"My handwriting is really messy, so I feel sorry for my students."
「私の字は相当汚いから、授業を受けている学生に申し訳ない。」
"My life is such a mess. My boyfriend dumped me, I went bankrupt, and I lost my job."
「私の人生は超めちゃくちゃバイ。彼氏に振られたり、破産したり、仕事も失った。」
"Don't make a mess."
「部屋を散らかさないで。」
"My house is such a mess." （これも毎日言っている文章）
「私の家は相当散らかっとう。」
わかるやろう？子供が生まれる前に、この単語をあまり言わんかったような気がする。まぁ、mess はいいんじゃない？だって、子供がいないピカピカな家はイヤだ。そうやろう？
Got it? I have this feelng that I rarely uttered this word until I had kids. Well, who really cares about mess, right? A sparkling clean house would mean no kids, and I love my kids. Kids are good. Right?
2. Stuff. この単語はバリバリ良い。相当多目的な単語だ。日本語の単語を例えにすると、「やつ」かな。「やつ」はマジ便利な単語くない？ある日、私のFacebookページに「フライ返し」の写真を載せた。で、読者にクイズ。「これは、英語で何というもの？」日本の男性の読者は、こう答えた。「あれは、フライ返しというの？初めて知った。僕はずっと、「炒めるやつ」って呼んできた。」ウケる。ちなみに、「フライ返し」は英語で、"spatula" と言います。
This is a totally great word, and very versitile. I guess if I had to think of a similar versatile Japanese word, it would be yatsu. One day, I posted a picture on my Facebook page of a spatula, and I asked my readers if they knew how to say it in English. Well, the Japanese word is frai gaeshi. So, one male reader posted, "That thing is called a frai gaeshi? That is the first time I have heard that. I always called it that thing to fry stuff with." Cracked me up.
英語で「stuff」は色んな意味がある。「もの」「こと」など。単語で説明するより、例文を見てみよう。
In English, "stuff" has many meanings. But rather than giving your a bunch of meaningless words out of context, let's look at some example sentences.
"I have so much stuff to do this week."
「今週、やらんといけんことがバリバリ多いバイ。」
"She has so much stuff in her room, she can't find anything."
「部屋にものがありすぎるから、何も見つからない。」
"Don't touch my stuff!"
「私の物、触らんで！」
"She has a lot of hard stuff going on in her life right now."
「彼女は、今の人生にいろいろあってさ。」
うちのキッズが一番言うのは、"Don't touch my stuff!"だ。もう一つは、"Why is she always borrowing my stuff? She has her own stuff...." 「何で、私のものいつも借りとると？自分のものがあるのに！」
The sentences you see above are the ones I most hear out of my children's mouths....
ちなみに、stuff （物、こと）と staff （スタッフ）のカタカナは同じだから、気をつけてね。日本人はよく間違えるからさ。
By the way, Japanese people often confuse the English words "stuff" and "staff" because the katakana spelling is the same. Be careful with that!
