家のリニューアルを頑張る

3年前に買った今の家、築は2008年。見た目にはわからないですが、結構いろんなところにガタがきて壊れているところもボチボチと。一番大変なのは台所。オランダではキッチン家電をビルトインにするのを好む人が多く、そういうキッチンでは冷蔵庫、電子レンジ、食器洗い機、オーブン、そんなものはキッチンの中に埋め込められていたり、戸棚の中にあったりするのです。見た目にも統一感があるし、綺麗、と多くの人は思うでしょう。でも私は思わない。いや、思わないというのはちょっと言い過ぎかな、キレイだとは思うのですが、実用的でないと思うのです。
We bought this house 3 years ago. Since the house was build in 2008, you would not expect it, but many things are getting old and start breaking down. The crucial one is the kitchen. In the Netherlands, people prefer to have kitchens where all the electric equipment is build-in. Refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and oven, those kinds of things are build into the kitchen and some of the equipment is behind an outer door. It is harmonious and beautiful. Ordinary people probably think so, at least. But I don't. Or, "don't" is maybe too much to say, since it is beautiful but I don't find practicality there.
例えば、統一されたドアの裏にある冷蔵庫が壊れた場合、何ができると言えば、同じサイズのビルトインの冷蔵庫に買い換える、と基本的にこれしかないのです。冷蔵庫の容量を増やそうとか、ちょっと形を変えたいなぁということは不可能。でも家族って変わっていくもんですよね。私は家の中に柔軟性を持たせたい、と思うのです。不運なことに、我々が買った家にはビルトインのキッチンがついていました。そしてこの度冷蔵庫が壊れた・・・（電子レンジもオーブンも不具合ありありですし・・・）
For example, in case your refrigerator behind one of the fancy doors breaks down, you can only buy the same size build-in one again. There is no expansion possibility or easy design change. But a family is a dynamic thing. I would like to have flexibility in our house. Unfortunately, the house we bought had the build-in kitchen and the refrigerator broke down (also microwave and oven are causing trouble).
我が家の家族構成は私と男３人。ま、男と言っても一人は7歳、もう一人は3歳ですがね。でもここ10年もすると食べ物の消費量はものすごく増えるでしょうね。我らは大きな冷蔵庫に変えたい！でも冷蔵庫のスペースは決まっている・・・。
We are a family with three men, although to be fair one is 7 and another is only 3. All the more, we expect food consumption in our family to expand considerably in the next 10 years. We would like to buy a new big refrigerator.... but the refrigerator space is fixed...
じゃあ、キッチンをリニューアルしよう！これが始まりでした。それが、我らのキッチン、敷かれた床の上に乗っていないという事が発覚。もしキッチンを違うデザインのものにしようとすると、床も変えないといけない・・・。これは大変だぞ。どうせ床を変えるんだったら、床暖房にした方が良くない？と、どんどん野望はふくらんでいって。でももちろん十分に先立つものがあるわけでなく。どうしたらいいかな？
Let's renew the kitchen! That was our first thought. But we realized that our kitchen is not on top of the floor. If we want to change the style of kitchen, we need to change the floor too.... That is a big operation.... If we change the floor, why not install floor heating?? Our desire just grows and grows. But of course we don't have enough money to afford to do everything... what is a good way?
我らが解決策に選んだのは、家をちょっと建て増しする事でした。ええー？なんでそうなるん？と思うかもしれません。実はこのプランも我らの野望リストに入っていたのですよ。うちのダイニングとキッチンはそんなに大きくないので、これまでも結構苦労してきたのです。これが建て増しを決めた一個の理由。去年の終わり頃、この建て増しが出来上がったのですわ。
The solution we took was to build small extention of the house. It may not be a solution that you imagined? Actually this was always on our wish list. since out dining and kitchen are not very big, we are struggling in that area. That is one of the reasons why we decided to have the house extention. Around the end of last year, the new part of the house was finished.
壁にペンキを塗って、床を入れて、３階にあった洗濯機と乾燥機を下に持ってきて・・・、ついに新しい冷蔵庫がやってきたのです。少なくとも現時点での緊急案件は解決。。ちなみに前の冷蔵庫は扉を取っ払って棚になっております。
We painted the wall, put a floor in, carried down the washing machine and the dryer and bought finally a new refrigerator! At least the most pressing problems are solved now. The old refrigerator became shelving after we removed the doors.
