6月の初旬、部署の遠足がありました。この遠足、何のためにするのかというと、ま、いわゆるチームビルディングというやつで、一緒に働く同僚同士、仕事がらみだけではなく仲良くなりましょうとのことで。この遠足、一年に一度することになっていて、幹事は自分たちでやります。今年はもう一人の外国人の同僚とともに、幹事を引き受けました。
I had a group outing of my company in early June. What is such an outing for? It is a kind of team building activity for a group of people working together. We are supposed to have this kind of thing once a year. This year, I raised my hand to be the organizer, together with my other foreign colleague.
そう、幹事なので、自分のやりたいことを選べるのです。予算が少ないので、選択肢は限られてるし、部署の平均年齢もちょっとお高め（５０越え）だし、みんなが参加できるものを選ばないといけないということはありますけどね。でも私、面白そうなのを見つけたのですよ。会社の割と近くにAlde feanenという国立公園があって、以前にそこに遊びに行った際に、そこに普段は行けない島があるのを見つけていたのです。この島、実は”サバイバル”のイベント等を提供している会社が使っているようでした。私、そこでどんなことができるのか興味津々、早速ネットサーチを開始しました。
Since I was the organizer, I can choose what I want to do. Due to the budget restrictions, the choice was limited. Also, the average age in our group is quite high (over 50), and we needed to think of something everybody could join. But I could find something interesting! The location was the Alde feanen National park. When I visited this area previously, I had noticed there is an island there where you cannot usually go. That island is used by a company that organises 'survival' activitues. I was very curious what kind of survival we could do there and looked it up.
その会社のホームページが出てきましたよ。実はこの会社、我らのような会社の遠足用にかなり色々なプランを提供していて、価格も結構お手頃。”これだ！”ほぼ即座にここを使うことに決定。これで私の好奇心も満たされるということで。
The company homepage popped up. They had a lot of activities for our kind of office group and the price was relatively affordable. "Yes!" We almost immediately decided to use this company. My curiosity would be fullfiled!
いろんなプランの中から我ら、”サバイバル”を選択。このサバイバルプランはカヌー遊びとセットになっていました。この公園、運河が網の目のように流れていて、そこでカヌー遊びをした後、あのミステリアスな島に渡って”サバイバル”をするとのことで。完璧！実際に何をするのか詳細も知らないまま、申し込み完了。
Out of several activities, we chose Survival. It was offered in combination with canoeing. There are a lot of waterways in this park and we could go through the myriad canals by canoe and later we move to the island and do the survival activity. Great! So we chose this without checking what we exactly were supposed to do.
グループの同僚に招待状を送り、その招待状には濡れるかもしれないことと、替えの服とタオルは持ってきた方がいいよーと警告も書きました。でもほぼ全員が参加、と。何と幸先の良い。あとは良い天気に恵まれるのを祈るのみ。
We invited our group colleagues, but warned them of the possibility of getting wet. "It would be wise to bring spare clothes and towel", etc. But almost everybody accepted this invitation. All we had left to do was hope for good weather.
当日、天気はまぁまぁ。晴天というわけではなかったけれど、オランダの標準からいくと結構いい方かな。待ち合わせ場所に集まり、この遠足を提供している会社の人を探しました。女性が一人現れて、我々全員を運河縁に連れていきました。そこにはたくさんのカヌーがすでに用意されていましたよ。彼女はカヌーですることを簡単に説明してくれ、戻ってくる時間を告げると、”じゃ、楽しんでね！”と、さっといなくなってしまいました。カヌーの漕ぎ方や、カヌーを水に下ろす等は自分たちで出来て当然？めっちゃオランダらしい・・・。
On the day, the weather was ok. Not great, but not so bad by Dutch standards. We gathered at the meeting location and I searched for the person from the organizing company. A woman appeared and took us to the side of a canal. There were a lot of canoes ready there. We received some short instruction about what we would do and for how long. The woman said, "have fun!" and (probably) went back. Everybody was supporsed to know how to canoe and we needed to put the canoe into the canal by ourselves. This is very Dutch....
でもオランダ人の同僚たちはこんなこと屁でもなく、スムーズにみんな水に降りることができました。このカヌー遊びですることといえば、
ー コースの所々に橋がかかっていて、その橋の下側に問題が書かれた紙が貼ってある。全ての橋をくぐって答えを集めると、４桁の数字が作れる。その数字でこの会社が準備してくれた宝箱を開けることができる。そしてその中のお宝は我々がいただける。ということなんだそうな。
But all our Dutch colleagues can do those things without problem. We could get into the water quite smoothly. The assignment of canoe trip was:
- There are some bridges on the route. Underneath each bridge, there is a paper with a question. We pass all the bridges and collect the answers to make a number. The number can be used to open a treasure box. When we succesfully open the box, we can get whatever is inside of the box.
我ら結構な人数のグループだったのですが、この回答を書くべき紙はたったの一枚。実際のところ、私は誰がこの問題に取り組んでいるのか、さらに誰がこの紙とペンを持っていたのかすら知りませんでしたわ。制限時間が来て、我らスタート地点に戻りました。そこで、実は誰も真剣に問題に取り組んでいなかったことが判明。。仕方がない、数字は適当に当てるか、ということで、一個一個試す我々。４桁なので、10000回以下では正しい数字が見つかるだろうって。あほやな。。
We were a big group and the paper with the assignment was only one. So I didn't even know who was working on the quiz and even keeping the paper and a pen. The time passed and we went back to the original location. We realized that nobody actually completed the quiz.... We started guessing the number... Four digit so if we try one by one, we can open the box with less than 10000 trial... So stupid aren't we?
でも幸運にも我らこの宝箱、開けれたのです。中には人数分のチョコレートバーが！なかなかいい宝物ではないですか！この時点まではまだあまり濡れたものはおらず。
But we could open the box! There were chocolate bars for everybody. Such a nice treasure! Up to that point, nobody got seriously wet.
それからサバイバルの島に移動。もちろん、ここ、島なので、ゴムボートで渡らないといけませんでした。一人がふざけてこのゴムボートに飛び乗ったその時です！よろけた同僚の一人の顔から、（高級）サングラスが、ポチャンと水（しかも茶色）の中へ・・・。水が結構浅かったのですが、色のせいでどこにあるか全く見えず。でも一人のインターンの男の子が自ら水に入ってこのサングラスを見つけてくれました。彼は濡れてビショビショ。でもおかげさまでそれからというものの、みんなから水に落ちることへの恐怖心が消えたというか何というか。
Then we moved to the island. Since it is an island, we needed to go there by rubber boat. When one person jumped into the rubber boat, one colleague's nice sunglasses fell into the water (brown color).... The water was relatively shallow but it was completely invisible. One guy (acutally an intern) volunteered to get into the water. He found the sunglasses, but he got completely wet. After that we all somehow lost the scared feeling towards falling into the water.
下の写真がサバイバルのコース。この島、実は二つに分かれていて、真ん中に結構広い水路が。この水路の上をロープや、丸太のようなものが渡してあって、それを水に落ちないように渡るというもの。結構な人数が水に落ち、見ているだけでも楽しい楽しい！
This is what the survival course looks like. The island actually consists of two parts and there was a waterway in between. There are ropes or wood connecting the halves. We had to (try to) cross. It was great fun! Quite some people fell into the water and it was very enjoyable just looking at those people.
私、個人的にはこういうの大好き。もちろん、人々の娯楽に貢献させていただきました。結構長ーいターザンロープがあって、それを２回目に渡った時のことでした。掴まるところがちょっと低かったかしら・・・。
I like this kind of thing a lot. And I of course contributed to other people's fun. There was a tarzan rope swing (quite big), and when I tried it, I discovered I was a bit too low...
いっぱい遊んだあとはみんなでBBQを楽しんで、我らの遠足は終了。結構みんな楽しんでくれたようで。満足満足。オランダ人って
こういう濡れる遊びとか気にしないで参加してくれるのねー。
After this activity, we ended this outing with BBQ. The feedback was all positive. Dutch people evidently don't mind wet forms of entertainment!
