やった！ついにやった！ばんざーい！！
We did it! Finally we did it! Yippee---!
というのは、この家に引越して一年、ようやく３階のDropさんの仕事部屋に「適切な方法で」インターネットケーブルが通ったということ。（はは、つまらないことで申し訳ない。）
(Sorry, this is actually a trivial matter.) But we finally managed to lead an internet cable through to Drop's working room in the attic "properly".
私、日本にいたときはインターネットケーブルや電話線のつなぎ口が家のどの部分にあるかなんて決まっているものだと思っていました。家を建てる時に建築会社が決めることだと。だからとくに考えることなく電話は電話線のつなぎ口の近くに、テレビはテレビ線のつなぎ口の近くに普通に置いてました。でもね、あれって自由に変えることができるのです。DIY国オランダ、そんなことも自分でやっちゃうのですよ。
When I was living in Japan, I was thinking that the location of an outlet of internet cable or phone cable are fixed in any house. Those kind of things are decided by the building company. So I tended to just put my (landline) phone close to the outlet of the phone cable and my TV close to the outlet of the TV cable. But apparently you can change those locations. Here in the Netherlands, DIY country, people do that kind of things by themselves.
さて、昨今インターネットは欠かせません。我が家もWifiにしているのですが、Dropさんの仕事場は３階、Wifiのルーターは１階、Wifiじゃちょっと弱いんですよね。で、彼の希望は有線。じゃあ、ケーブルが3階に来ていたかというと、来ていませんでした。そうなると、引かないといけませんよね。そこから我らの戦いは始まったのでした。
In modern society, you cannot live without internet. We have wifi at home, but since Drop's work room is in the 2nd floor and our Wifi rooter is on the ground floor, the strength is not great. Besides, he strongly preferers wired internet. Was an outlet of an internet cable available on the 2nd floor? No, it was not. So we needed to pull a cable up there. That was the start of our struggle.
さて、どうやってやるのでしょう？基本はシンプル。オランダの家は大体コンクリートでできていて、その壁の中を配線用のPVCのチューブが埋め込まれています。そのチューブたちが集まるのが、一つの部屋、メーターボックスのある部屋になっています。大体どんな家でも電気、ガス、水道、テレビ他、すべての配線がここに引かれているのです。下の写真のように、メーターボックスの部屋の天井の方を見上げるとチューブがいっぱい見えるでしょう？このチューブが各階の各お部屋につながっていて、その中に各配線が入っているんだそうな。例えば写真では下の箱のようなものにつながっているのはすべて電気。このチューブ、結構たくさんあって、大半はすでに何らかの線が通っているのですが、空のものもあるのです。
How do you do that? The basis is very simple. Dutch houses are made of concrete, with PVC tubes embedded in the walls. All these tubes come together in one room: the meter box. Most of the cases, all the cables like electricity, gas, water and TV etc, lead there. When you look up to the ceiling of the meter box, there are many tubes sticking out from the ceiling, as in the picture below. Those tubes are running through the house and end up to each room on each floor. All the important cables are in those tubes. Fo example, all the tubes going into the white box in the picture below are for electricity. But there are quite a lot of other tubes running through the house, and some of them are empty.
その空のチューブがあなたの何らかの線を通したい先につながっていたら、あなたは超ラッキー！そこにケーブルを通すだけ！残念ながら違う（いらない）ケーブルが入っていたら、自分の通したいケーブルに取り替えるというわけです。
If one of the empty tubes connects to the location you want to pull a cable to, you are lucky. You can just push your cable through the tube, If not, but a different (unnecessary) cable runs through, you can replace the cable to your desired one.
通せばよい、と簡単に書きましたが、このチューブ、メーターボックスから壁の中を通って各部屋に伸びているので、必ずしも真っ直ぐというわけではありません。コの字に曲がっていることもあるし、その長さは１０ｍ以上あることも。もちろん全く見えないですしね。そんなところにどうやってケーブルを通すの？そうです。実はそう簡単ではないのですよ。下の写真のものを使います。オランダ語でTrekveerと言います（ちなみに英語ではFish tapeというらしい。初めて知った・・・）。長ーい金属や、プラスチックの線です。我が家にあるのは金属のもので、詰まったバネのようになっています。硬いのだけど、自由自在に曲がる線といった感じかな。これをこのメーターボックスから延びるチューブの中を通してゆくわけです。
I wrote just "push through the tube" as if it is very easy thing to do. But the tubes run from the meter box to each room through the walls. They are not always straight, sometimes U-shaped, often long (like more than 10m) and completely invisible. How can we actually put the cable through there? Yes. It is actually not so easy. The thing on the picture below is used. It is called Trekveer in Dutch (Fish tape in English, I didn't know...) It is a very long metal or plastic wire. We have a metal one and it looks like very dense spring. It is firm but still flexible. We start pushing this trekveer into the tube from the meter box.
我らの場合は、引越直後の去年の冬、１階から３階のDropの仕事部屋まで、運よく空のチューブを見つけたのです。ラッキーと早速このTrekveerを通し始めました。それが、全くダメ。なぜかこのTrekveerが道中のどこかで引っかかって全く動かなくなるのです。いろんな方法を試しました。ものすごい力を入れて押したり引っ張ったり、１階から押し上げてみたり、３階から押し下げてみたり、Trekveerを濡らしてみたり、掃除機を使ってものすごい軽いビデオテープをチューブを通して吸い出そうとしてみたり。でもどの方法もダメでした。結局その時はあきらめてケーブルを壁の中じゃなくて、室内を通すことにしたのです。ケーブルを天井を這わせて２階の部屋から３階の部屋に引っぱる、ものすごい醜い方法で。
In our case, last winter, just after moving into this house, we forunately found an empty tube connecting the meter box to Drop's office. Lucky! We immediately started to try pushing the trekveer to the tube. But it didn't work. Somehow the trekveer got stuck somewhere on the way. We tried many different wayｓ, such as pushing very hard, tried from downstairs or upstairs, made the trekveer wet, tried to suck very light tape by a vacuum cleaner through the tube, etc. Nothing worked. We gave up eventually and ran the internet cable through the house. It was an ugly solution, one cable running from one room to the other, all the way up.
約１年後、Dropさんが他の用事でホームセンターに行ったとき、棚に並ぶ新しいTrekveerを見て、「これならいけるかも。（実はまだあきらめていなかった。） ankoに言わず、試してみよう。」と思ったそう。私は会社にいてDropさんからのWhatsappのメッセージを受け取りました。「この穴覚えてる？Trekveer通せたよ。」と。
About one year later, Drop visited a home center and saw a new trekveer. He thought "this might work". (He actually didn't want to give up...) "Let's try without telling Anko chan...." I received a whatsapp message while I was in the office. "Do you remember this hole? I made it through."
そう、通せたのです！Dropさんは私に事前に言うと、Trekveer１個持ってるのに、また新しいの買うの？と反対されるかもと思って言わなかったんだって。でも１年前に諦めたとき、より不満だったのは私だったので、このメッセージはとっても嬉しかったのです。
Yes, he did it! Drop was afraid that I would be unhappy that he had bought a new trekveer even though we already had one. But I had been even more frustrated than Drop when we gave up. It was very good news for me to hear.
私が帰宅してすぐ、我らは作業を開始しました。Trekveerはすでに通っているので、次にすることは？
After I was back home, we started working on it again. Now the trekveer was through, what should we do next?
写真で見えるかな、次はこのTrekveerの先にインターネットケーブルをきつく、でも柔軟性は失わないように結び付けて、反対側からTrekveerを引き戻すことでこのケーブルをチューブに通すのです。
しっかり結べた？じゃ、始めましょう！Dropさんが３階から注意深くTrekveerを引っ張ります。８ｍ…９ｍ…あともう少し… ブチッ！！結んだところが切れた！叫ぶDrop！
Can you see in the picture? We tied the internet cable to the trekveer very tightly but without losing the flexibility and pulled the trekveer back to lead the cable through the tube.
Did we tie it well? Let's start. Drop started carefully pulling the trekveer from upstairs... 8m... 9m... almost there..... buchi! The connection broke! Drop screamed!!
落ち着けDrop。もう一度やってみよう。一回通ったんだから、もう一度できるはず。でも今回は私にやらせてね。同じ作業をもう一度繰り返す我々・・・・ゆっくり、ゆっくり・・・。そして・・・できた！私の我慢強さに感謝！（笑）
Calm down Drop. Let's do it again. You were successful once, we must be able to do it again. But this time, I will be in charge. We tried the same process again.... carefully.... and we made it. Thanks to my patience. (smile)
ケーブルさえ通ってしまえば、あとは簡単。私がしないといけないことは（私、こういう仕事大好きなのです。）ケーブルの両端にプラグを付けるだけ！さて、どうしたらよいのでしょう？
まず、ケーブルのカバーを開いて、中の色分けされたワイヤーを出します。
Once the cable is through, the rest is easy. All my job from here, because I like to do this kind of precision job. Only putting the plugs on both side of the cable. How can I do this?
Open the cable jacket and take the colored wires out.
そして、この色分けされたワイヤーたちを正しい順番にプラグに差込み・・・
Then insert the colored wires into the internet cable plug in the right order.
この下の写真の器具で、プラグを締め付けて固定するのです。
And using the tool below, just crimp the plug.
これが出来上がり。
Final result.
