ある日、アーニャは山沿いの田んぼ道を自転車で通った。田植えの時期に迫り、田んぼには水が張られている。その田んぼからカエルの鳴き声が聞こえる。玉を転がすような鳴き声がすると思えば、別の田んぼからケロケロと鳴く声が聞こえる。
要するにカジカガエルとアマガエルが別々の縄張りで子孫繁栄してる。小林一茶の俳句にもカエルが登場するが、この２種類をカワズ、カエルと使い分けている。同じ字でも呼び名で表現する手法にも驚くが、信濃町出身の彼にとっては両方とも馴染み深いのであろう。
そう思ってるうちに帰宅したアーニャは晩ごはん食べて寝た。
人間の使用言語の違いは、別の種類との混血を防ぐためなのかとカエルに学ぶアーニャであった。
