I'll tell you about my family. I'm an only child. I don't have any brothers or sisters. Actually, my grandmother was a big part of my childhood. And my grandmother lives with us in Hong Kong now. I see.

Let's talk about your commute to school. How did you go to school?

So, I went on the school bus. It was a big yellow school bus.

Oh yeah, it's a typical American school bus.

Did you ever take the school bus in Hong Kong?

No, I didn't. Actually, I took the public bus. It was a double-decker bus. And I always sat at the very front of the second floor.

So, how long did it take to go to school?

Well, 20 or 30 minutes. It depended on the traffic in downtown Hong Kong. Okay, Steve, let's talk about school lunch. What did you have for lunch?

Usually, my mom made a lunch for me. In Japan, they say bento. Do they have a word like bento in Hong Kong?

Actually, it comes from bento. We call it bientan.

Really?

Yeah.

Did you bring a bientan to school?

Yeah, yeah, I did.

Really?

Yeah.

What was inside your bento?

A lot. For example, pork meat…,

I see.

Rice sometimes, fried rice, or tofu.

Did you have any dim sum? How do you say dim sum in Japanese?

It's tenshin or yum cha.

Did you have dim sum in your bento?

No, that's too difficult to make. What did you do after school in the U.S.?

Well, after school, I usually played sports. I played baseball, tennis, how about you? Is there any after school in Hong Kong? Because you finish school around 6 p.m.

Yes, we do have after school activities, and basketball.

So, on your basketball team, was there a seniority system like senpai, kouhai system?

Well, there's a word for senpai and kohai, but we treat everyone the same.

  • commute to school /kəˈmjuːt tə skuːl/ 通学する、通学
  • at the very front /ət ðə ˈvɛri frʌnt/ 一番前に
  • depend on /dɪˈpɛnd ɑːn/ ~による、~次第である
  • make a lunch /meɪk ə lʌntʃ/ 昼食(弁当)を作る
  • come from /kʌm frəm/ ~に由来する
  • fried rice /fraɪd raɪs/ チャーハン
  • dim sum /dɪm ˈsʌm/ 点心
  • after-school activities /ˈæftər skuːl ækˈtɪvətiz/ 放課後活動

  • treat everyone the same /triːt ˈɛvriˌwʌn ðə seɪm/ みんなを平等に接する

I went on the school bus.
I went to school on the school bus. または I took the school bus.

my mom made a lunch for me

  • my mom made lunch for me(昼食を作ってくれた)
  • my mom made me a lunch(私にお弁当を作ってくれた)
  • my mom packed me a lunch(お弁当を持たせてくれた)

pork meat

  • pork
  • beef
  • chicken

Is there any after school in Hong Kong?

  • Do you have after-school activities in Hong Kong?

または

  • Is there anything like after-school activities in Hong Kong?

Yes, we do have after school activities, and basketball.

Commute

  • commute to school
  • school commute

  • How did you get to school?

double-decker bus

  • I always sat upstairs.
  • I liked sitting in the front seat on the top deck.

treat everyone the same
