Lesson (5)

Nana is heading into an interview at Lennon Microsystems, her second-choice company, since it’s an in-person interview, right from the start, she’s feeling a bit nervous.

second choice → second-choice(複合形容詞なのでハイフン)

• right from the start /raɪt frəm ðə stɑrt/ 最初から

  • in-person → /ɪm ˈpɝsən/(n→mに同化しやすい)
  • right from → /raɪt frəm/ →「ライフラム」に近い

Which areas can Nana’s technical skills be applied to?

-They can be applied to automotive and power devices.

Hi, I’m Matt from HR. You’re Yanagida Nana, right?

Yes, nice to meet you, Matt. I really appreciate this opportunity.

Please have a seat.

Thank you.

So, to start with, what interests you about this position?

I’m an engineer with experience in developing electronic parts for smartphones. I’ve also worked closely with engineers in ASEAN countries. That experience taught me to work effectively with colleagues from different backgrounds. I believe that will help me contribute to cross-border projects.

That’s impressive. I’m interested to hear a bit more about your technical strengths.

Certainly. My strengths are (in?) making devices smaller and more reliable. And I also excel in improving basic parts like resistors and capacitors. I believe I can apply these skills directly to automotive and power devices.

• HR /ˌeɪtʃ ˈɑr/ 人事部(Human Resources)

  • resistor → /rɪˈzɪstər/(**-zis-**に強勢)
  • capacitor → /kəˈpæsɪtər/(**-pæ-**に強勢、「キャパ」ではなく「カパ」に近い)
  • power → /ˈpaʊər/(2音節「パウア」)
  • device → /dɪˈvaɪs/(後ろに強勢)

--

I really appreciate this opportunity.

I truly appreciate the opportunity to share my experience.

I deeply appreciate your support throughout this process.

I’m grateful for the chance to be here today.

Thank you very much for this opportunity.

--

• throughout ~ /θruˈaʊt/ ~を通して
• grateful for ~ /ˈɡreɪtfəl fɔr/ ~に感謝している
• the chance to ~ /ðə ʧæns tu/ ~する機会
• share my experience /ʃɛr maɪ ɪkˈspɪriəns/ 自分の経験を共有する

  • appreciate → /əˈpriʃieɪt/(「プリ」に強勢)
  • opportunity → /ˌɑpərˈtunəti/(「トゥー」に強勢)
  • throughout → /θruˈaʊt/(th+連結で聞き取りにくい)

❌ I appreciate you.(文脈によっては不自然)

✅ I appreciate your support.

What are your strengths?

My key strength is problem-solving under pressure. In my current role, I was asked to deliver a prototype within just six weeks. It was far from easy. I probably drank a year’s worth of coffee in that time. But we still managed to finish ahead of schedule. That experience showed me how to stay focused, bring people together, and get results.

problem solving → problem-solving(複合名詞)

• strengths /strɛŋkθs/ 強み
• problem-solving /ˈprɑbləm ˌsɑlvɪŋ/ 問題解決
• under pressure /ˈʌndər ˈprɛʃər/ プレッシャーの中で
• current role /ˈkɝrənt roʊl/ 現在の職務
• deliver a prototype /dɪˈlɪvər ə ˈproʊtəˌtaɪp/ 試作品を完成させる
• within ~ /wɪˈðɪn/ ~以内に
• far from easy /fɑr frəm ˈizi/ 決して簡単ではない
• a year’s worth of ~ /ə jɪrz wɝθ əv/ ~1年分
• ahead of schedule /əˈhɛd əv ˈskɛʤul/ 予定より早く
• stay focused /steɪ ˈfoʊkəst/ 集中を保つ
• bring people together /brɪŋ ˈpipəl təˈɡɛðər/ 人をまとめる
• get results /ɡɛt rɪˈzʌlts/ 成果を出す

  • strengths → /strɛŋkθs/(子音多くて難しい「ストレンクス」)
  • prototype → /ˈproʊtəˌtaɪp/(「プロトタイプ」)
  • ahead of → /əˈhɛdəv/(連結して「アヘダヴ」)

Yes, adding numbers like six weeks makes your story more vivid and credible.

--

• like six weeks /laɪk sɪks wiks/ 例えば6週間のように
• make ~ more vivid /meɪk ˈvɪvɪd/ ~をより生き生きさせる

  • vivid → /ˈvɪvɪd/(前に強勢)
  • credible → /ˈkrɛdəbəl/(「クレダブル」に近い)
  • numbers like → /ˈnʌmbərz laɪk/(zとlが連結)

I trained many new employees.

è I trained eight new employees in the past year, and six of them achieved certification within their first three months.

Is a good example.

Indeed.

• in the past year /ɪn ðə pæst jɪr/ 過去1年間で
• achieve certification /əˈʧiv ˌsɝtəfɪˈkeɪʃən/ 資格を取得する
• within ~ /wɪˈðɪn/ ~以内に
• six of them /sɪks əv ðɛm/ そのうち6人
• a good example /ə ɡʊd ɪɡˈzæmpəl/ 良い例

  • indeed → /ɪnˈdid/(後ろに強勢)
  • employees → /ɪmˈplɔɪiz/(「プロイ」に強勢)

It was far from easy. I probably drank a year’s worth of coffee in that time.

The joke makes you sound human and approachable while still showing achievement.

• make you sound ~ /meɪk ju saʊnd/ ~のように聞こえさせる・印象づける
• show achievement /ʃoʊ əˈʧivmənt/ 実績を示す

  • approachable → /əˈproʊʧəbəl/(「プロウ」に強勢)
  • achievement → /əˈʧivmənt/(「チーヴ」に強勢)
  • makes you → /meɪks ju/ →「メイクスユー」→「メイクスュー」に近い
