U.S. Stocks End the Week Up, Despite Consumer Anxiety on Trade
President Trump said the U.S. will unilaterally set tariffs for many countries, as a new survey showed high levels of consumer anxiety over trade. Plus, Charter Communications agreed to buy rival Cox Communications in a multibillion-dollar deal. And Novo Nordisk shares fell after the Ozempic maker said its CEO will step down. Danny Lewis hosts.

US stocks ended the day slightly up despite continued trade anxiety casting a shadow on consumer sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 332 points to close at 42,655. The S&P 500 advanced almost 42 points, and the NASDAQ gained 99 points.
New survey data from the University of Michigan showed consumer sentiment unexpectedly worsened in recent weeks, mainly due to concerns about trade policy. President Trump added a wrinkle to trade uncertainty when he said the US will soon unilaterally set tariffs for many countries.

But investors are finding reasons for optimism in a strong first-quarter earnings season and the easing of US-China trade relations.

And in individual stocks today, two of the country's largest broadband internet providers have a plan to merge. Charter Communications agreed to buy its rival Cox Communications for $21.9 billion. Shares of Charter rose 1.8%.
Video game maker Take-Two Interactive said it expects a full-year loss and lower-than-expected sales after it delayed the hotly anticipated next installment of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Shares fell 2.4%.
And Novo Nordisk took a hit after the Ozempic maker said its CEO will step down due to recent market challenges and a pullback in its stock price. US-listed shares fell 2.7%.

U.S. Consumer Sentiment Falls in May to Second Lowest Ever

Americans felt worse about the economy in May than they did in April, with sweeping tariffs raising the prospect of higher prices. The University of Michigan said today that its preliminary index of consumer sentiment for May was 50.8, down 3% from the previous month. Economists expected that number to rise to 53.5 in May. Instead, it dropped for the fifth straight month and hit the second-lowest level on record.
The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, has decided to take leave until an investigation into sexual assault allegations against him by a female aide is complete. Khan has denied any sexual misconduct. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that a female aide to Khan testified to United Nations investigators that he had forcible sexual intercourse with her on multiple occasions.
And Charter Communications struck a deal to buy Cox Communications for $21.9 billion. The merger will bring together two of the biggest broadband and cable operators in the US. The deal with Cox gives the combined company, which will be named Cox Communications, more heft in competing for customers, negotiating with programmers, and making network investments.

Though NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Union are at odds over wages for just 450 Workers, officials argue they can't strike a narrow deal on compensation that could set precedent for other negotiations. NJ Transit says a substitute bus service can carry just 20% of current rail customers.

We are exclusively reporting that just two weeks ahead of hurricane season, the newly appointed chief of the Federal Emergency Management Agency doesn't yet have a fully formed disaster response plan. David Richardson acknowledged as much in private meetings and has told staff he would complete it late next week. President Trump signed an executive order in January that established a FEMA Review Council to overhaul the agency.
And we are exclusively reporting that Bayer is making another push to resolve lawsuits linking the popular weed killer Roundup to cancer. The Roundup litigation has so far cost the company about $10 billion in legal payouts as part of the $16 billion it's set aside for settlements. About 67,000 cases alleging it caused plaintiff's cancer are still pending in US courts.
