She‘s a character that our listeners really like.

--

So, Rosa, what did you think of this past year’s dialogue?
There were fun to do. And I loved creating the characters. You did a great job, too.

Thanks. I tried hard to make them believable.

Yeah, you really brought the characters to life.

Right back at you.

So, who was your favorite character?

Maybe Barbara. She‘s a character that our listeners really like.

Hmm. I wonder why that is.

Well, she has a lot of fire. She’s like me, right?

You can say that again.

--

Right back at you

  • You’ve got everything you need, right?
  • You said you remembered that woman named Barbara, didn’t you?
  • It’s the way we’re taught at the school
  • I tried hard to make them believable.
  • I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a hoax. /hks/

Alright everyone. It’s time for practice. Today’s key point is keyword plus 説明. Let’s practice and don’t think about it too much. By now, you should be able to just go.
Alright guys, ready to begin? Let’s practice.

---

  • Is there something you’d like? I’ll buy it for you.
  • Mike said you had a question for me. What did you want to know?
  • We came to the conclusion that we should hire more staff.

We’ll see you guys in tomorrows’s review.

Looking forward to it. See you then.

I find it difficult to explain the photos otherwise.

Brandan, where are you going with the time capsule.
I’m taking it back to the university. I’m done with it.

Have you solved the mystery?

I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a hoax.

Why do you say that?

I managed to read the data chip inside the smartphone.

I thought it was rusted.

Not completely. There were some photos on it.

Photos of what?

A Halloween party, I think. There was somebody in a space alien costume. I find it difficult to explain the photos otherwise.

I see.

--

*a hoax /hoʊks/いたずら・でっち上げ

A hoax is a deliberate deception intended to make people believe something that is not true. It is often done for amusement or to trick someone

--

  • There were some photos on it.

-> The guy in the park. <>NG: There was the guy …

I find it difficult to explain the photos otherwise.

->It (to speak English )= not so difficult

It’s great that you two get along.

->it(that you two get along) is great

Alright everybody, it’s time for today’s practice. Ah, 受けるit, what a great addition to your toolkit. It’s easy to use., if you practice. All right, are you ready?

--

  • I find it easy to wake up early now. It used to be really hard.
  • It’s strange that it is so hot today. It’s still March.
  • It’s less stressful living in the country. Time moves a little slower here.

I find it difficult to sleep for a long time these days.

Well, it’s not necessarily a bad thing if you suddenly started sleeping 12 hours a day, I’d be worried.

And hey, that means you have more time to do things.

Well, home, yes, but I don’t know. Is it the present or the future?
Don’t you know what they say, home is where the heart is.

It was Zaytox that caused the time warp to happen.

--

Commander, we have Earth insight. It’s our Earth. The year is 2025.

Amazing. You know, Zaytox brought me home before from Mars.

He did?

Yes, several years ago.

It’s incredible that we went back to 1865.

I can’t believe it. It was Zaytox that caused the time warp to happen.

Speaking of Zaytox, did you take a photo of him to prove all this?

Yes, wait, where’s my smartphone? It’s not here.

Don’t tell me.
Oh, I must have left it back in the past.

Oh, no.

Okay, everyone. It’s time to practice. In English, the 順番 and emphasis will completely change the meaning of the sentence. So today, we really want you to feel the intonation and emphasize words and what they mean in their position as you practice. Alright, let’s practice putting these words in the spotlight.

---

  • It was Jenny that broke the printer, not me. Make her fix it.
  • It was question number two that I got wrong. It was really trickly.
  • It was at one a.m. that we finally arrived home. We were all very tired.

We might have taught the lesson, but it was you guys that did the work. Great job everyone! See you all later!

Kinzo, I want to thank you for all you’ve done for us.

You’re welcome. But why are you saying this now?

I have to tell you something.

Yes, of course.

Anton and I are leaving England very soon. We won’t be coming back.

This is quite a shock. Don’t you like teaching the students?

Of course I do. But what a fool I’ve been. I should have known we couldn’t do it forever. And Anton has other responsibilities back home.

I see. I shall miss you both my friend.

--

Hey, you’ve been working all day non-stop. Don’t you ever get tired?

Seriously, you’re going to burn yourself out if you don’t take a break. Why don’t we go for a walk? I found a nice café.

Alien, that was a masterpiece, wasn’t it? I saw that in a theater when I was a student.
Oh, really? That was the first movie that my parents told me I wasn’t allowed to watch. We were at the rental shop and I saw the egg. I said, oh, maybe it’s about dinosaurs. I want to watch. And they said, absolutely not.

Wow, Sensei, when you were a student. So, a really, really … long time ago.

Hello. You’re Mr. Kerr, the new science teacher, aren’t you?

Yes, I am. And may I ask your name, please?

I’m Lucy Robinson. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintances, sir.

You don’t have to be so formal.

Oh, it’s the way we’re taught at the school.

I see. It’s a good school, isn’t it?

And one more example. This one will just practice going up.

I’m your friend, aren’t I?

I’m your friend, am I not?

付加疑問文, in English, we call these little questions, tag questions because we clip them on to the end of a statement. The nuance is different depending on if the intonation is rising or declining. So let’s practice them and master the feeling together.

We’ll practice both intonations. So, repeat after us.

--

  • Uh, oh, the train stopped. We’re not going to be late, are we?
  • You arrived here before me, didn’t you? Have you checked into your hotel room yet?
  • No one can know what happened here. You’ll keep it a secret, won’t you?

You’ll keep practicing even after the lesson ends, won’t you? -Whoop?

Wow, the selection is great, but the prices have gone up.

Yeah, tell me about it.

Okay, let’s get in line. You’ve got everything you need, right?

I think so.

Wait. I think I’m forgetting something. Oh, now I remember. Pumpkin.

Pumpkin? We have Kabocya on the island.

I know. But I want to buy some canned pumpkin form America.

It’s a bit out of season for pumpkin pie, isn’t it.

I want to try making it again soon. I love pumpkin pie.

--

  • The selection is great, but the prices have gone up.

This is delicious, no?

This is delicious. Don’t you think?

Close the door, will you?

Close the door, would you?

Close the door, could you?

Close the door, won’t you?

Okay everyone. Today’s practice is one of my favorites. It’s not a full on question. It’s like a statement or a command with a little confirmation at the end. These are very common in casual conversations. So it’s important to master them and use them as much as you can. Alright, so, let’s begin.

Full on : まったくの;徹底的な;圧倒的な
Intense, complete, or extreme.

Enthusiastic and committed.

--

Wait right there, okay? I’ll bring the car around.

Yes, by human standards, she was very attractive.

Aren’t you leaving something out?

Leaving something out? What could I have left out?

The fact that you like Barbara.

That is nonsense, Genie. I only said that she was attractive.

So, you were attracted to her then.

  • The network is down? Can’t you fix it?
  • Please stop. Haven’t you done enough?

Okay everyone, it’s practice time. Now I can already hear your question.

David, why use 否定疑問文? Why not just regular 疑問文? It’s easy. It’s about feeling and emotion. These questions show unexpected surprise, suspicion and seek confirmation. They are very useful. So, let’s practice and add them to your toolkit.

All right, repeat after us.

--

  • I think it’s time we try a different approach. Don’t you think so?
  • Wait, why are you still here? Don’t you have a meeting to go to?
  • A transfer? Haven’t we talked about this? It’s just not possible right now.
