Trump Narrows China’s Access to Nvidia Chips
Plus, a federal judge has ordered Boeing to stand trial over two deadly 737 MAX crashes. And Dollar Tree is nearing a sale of its Family Dollar business to a consortium of private-equity investors for roughly $1 billion. Luke Vargas hosts.

Luke Vargas: Here is your morning brief for Wednesday, March 26th. I'm Luke Vargas for the Wall Street Journal.

The Trump administration is further limiting China's access to American technology, expanding a crackdown that began during Joe Biden's term. 80 companies and institutes have been added to the export control list, including a US affiliate of China's Inspur Group that is a large buyer of Nvidia chips. The move is aimed at closing loopholes in the export control regime that left room for blacklisted companies to buy US technology through affiliates. A spokesman for China's foreign ministry called the US action "typical hegemonic behavior that severely violates international law."

  • a US affiliate : 米国関連会社

The federal judge overseeing the criminal case against Boeing has ordered a trial over two deadly crashes of 737 MAX jets. Yesterday we reported the aerospace giant had been seeking to withdraw an earlier agreement to plead guilty for deceiving regulators before the crashes. The ruling increases the odds that Boeing will have to plead guilty or defend against a charge that it already said it committed. The company said it continues good faith discussions with the Justice Department while a spokeswoman for the department declined to comment.

  • Good faith: 誠意ある、真摯な。相手を欺く意図がないことを示す。

And we are exclusively reporting that Dollar Tree is nearing a sale of its Family Dollar business to private equity investors Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management for roughly $1 billion. The deal is expected to be announced this morning when Dollar Tree reports its quarterly results. The discount retail chain's shares are down about 10% so far this year, giving it a market value of a little less than $15 billion.

Stock markets in Asia, end of the day, mixed. European shares are trending lower, and US futures are also down ahead of data on durable goods orders due out at 10 A.M. Eastern.

  • durable goods 耐久財とは、3年以上の寿命を持つ有形の製品です

White House Narrows Tariff Plans
Plus, U.S. and Ukrainian officials are meeting in Saudi Arabia with hopes of extending a shaky cease-fire with Russia. And 23andME files for bankruptcy. Luke Vargas hosts.

Luke Vargas: Here is your morning brief for Monday, March 24th. I'm Luke Vargas for the Wall Street Journal.

The White House is narrowing down the list of tariffs set to take effect on April 2nd with sector-specific tariffs on cars, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors now likely not to be announced. Also being dialed back is the scope of so-called reciprocal tariffs aimed at matching U.S. duties with those charged by trading partners. According to people with knowledge of the planning, they will now be focused on just 15% of countries that maintain persistent trade imbalances with the U.S. which would likely include Canada and Mexico, China, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, and the European Union.

U.S. officials are meeting with a Russian delegation in Saudi Arabia today following talks with their Ukrainian counterparts on Sunday. According to U.S. officials, the goal of the talks is to extend a shaky ceasefire, preventing attacks on energy infrastructure to the Black Sea, with Washington hoping that the deal will be followed by broader peace negotiations.

And DNA testing company 23andME filed for bankruptcy last night. CEO Anne Wojcicki also stepped down from her role, but will remain on the board as she continues efforts to buy the company's assets. Those include DNA samples from more than 50 million people, which could be sold in bankruptcy proceedings. 23andME said any buyer would have to comply with applicable law governing consumer data.

Investors are welcoming the latest pivot on tariffs with U.S. stock benchmarks poised to start the week solidly higher, following broad gains in Europe and Asia this morning.

  • Pivot: /ˈpɪvət/ - 方向転換、旋回
