One hundred participants viewed photos of human and horse faces and judged whether each one showed signs of discomfort. While people were quick to identify pain in human faces, their accuracy dropped sharply with horses.
According to the researchers, this is rooted in evolution. Horses instinctively hide weakness to avoid attracting predators, developing an exceptional “poker face.” This survival strategy makes it hard even for humans—who care for them daily—to notice pain until their condition becomes more serious.

Researchers emphasize the need for proper education, including tools like the Horse Grimace Scale, which helps quantify pain through facial cues. With better training and awareness, we can detect discomfort early and ensure horses receive the care they deserve—bringing us one step closer to truly understanding their “hidden expressions.”
