何気なく過去に戻していくと、
突然“空白の10日間”が
現れる――。
1582年10月、
世界から10日分の日付が消えたのです。
それはバグでも、都市伝説でもなく、
実際に起こった“時間の修正”。

The 10 Days That Vanished from the World
In October 1582, people across Europe woke up to a strange surprise. When they went to bed, it was October 4—but when they woke up, the date had jumped straight to October 15. Ten entire days had disappeared from the calendar. This wasn’t a glitch or a prank—it was the result of a calendar reform known as the Gregorian Calendar. Before that, Europeans had been using the Julian Calendar, created by Julius Caesar back in 45 BCE. The Julian system was simple—one leap year every four years—but it was slightly too long. Over centuries, that tiny error caused the seasons to drift out of sync, and even the date of Easter began to slip earlier and earlier each year.

前日のカレンダーは10月4日だったのに、
翌朝には10月15日になっていたのです。
つまり、10日分の日付が
まるごと存在しなかったのです。

それまで使われていた「ユリウス暦」は、
1年を少し長く計算していたため、
長い年月のうちに季節とのズレが
生じてしまったのです。
その結果、春分の日が本来より早まり、
キリスト教の大切な祭りである
イースターの日付も合わなくなってしまいました。
Fixing the Calendar by Skipping Ten Days
To fix the growing problem, Pope Gregory XIII introduced a new calendar that would better match the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The only way to correct the existing drift was drastic: ten days had to be dropped. So after October 4, 1582, the next day became October 15. Along with that, the leap year rule was adjusted: years divisible by 100 would no longer be leap years—unless they were also divisible by 400. This fine-tuning made the calendar nearly identical to the actual solar year. The change might sound small, but it realigned human time with the rhythm of the planet itself.

このズレを正すため、
ローマ教皇グレゴリウス13世は
新しい暦を導入しました。
それが現在も世界で使われている
「グレゴリオ暦」です。
暦を元に戻すには、
たまった誤差を一気に消す必要がありました。
その方法は大胆で、
10月4日の翌日を10月15日とする、
つまり“10日を飛ばす”というものでした。
また、うるう年の計算方法も見直され、
「100で割り切れる年は平年、
ただし400で割り切れる年はうるう年」
という新しいルールが設けられました。
この変更により、
1年の長さは太陽の動きと
ほぼ完全に一致するようになったのです。

Catholic countries such as Spain, Italy, and Portugal adopted the new calendar right away, while Protestant regions like England and parts of Germany waited centuries. When Britain finally switched in 1752, people panicked, claiming that the government had “stolen 11 days” of their lives. Russia didn’t make the change until 1918, after the revolution—and even today, the Russian Orthodox Church still follows the old Julian dates for its holidays. If you scroll back far enough on your smartphone calendar, you can see the gap yourself: October 4 is immediately followed by October 15, 1582. It’s not a software bug—it’s living history, quietly preserved in your phone.

改暦をすぐに採用したのはカトリック諸国で、
イギリスやドイツ、ロシアなどは
宗教や政治の理由で数百年遅れて導入しました。
そのため、国によって「消えた日」は異なります。
現在のスマートフォンや
パソコンのカレンダーでは、
この歴史が忠実に反映されています。
1582年10月を開くと、
10月4日の次が15日になっているのです。
これはバグではなく、
実際に存在しなかった日付を
正確に表示しているのです。
ちなみに、日本でも明治5年（1872年）に
旧暦から新暦に切り替える際、
「12月がまるごと消えた」
ことがありました。
カレンダーの中には、
私たちが知らない“時間の歴史”が
ひっそりと刻まれているのです。
preserve は「保存する」「守る」「保護する」という意味の動詞です。
もの（食べ物・文化・自然など）や状態（平和・秩序など）を**“今のまま保つ”**というニュアンスがあります。
