テレビの誕生日紹介やニュースなどで
「双子」を見かけることが
増えたと感じませんか？
もちろん偶然という見方もありますが、
実は統計学的に見ても近年、
双子の誕生率は記録的な高さに
達しているそうです。
では、なぜ今、
世界中で双子がこれほど多く
生まれているのでしょうか――
その背景には、

Are Twins Really Becoming More Common?
In recent decades, the number of twins born around the world has risen significantly. Researchers from Radboud University in the Netherlands, the University of Oxford in the UK, and France’s National Institute for Demographic Studies analyzed population data from 165 countries between 2010 and 2015. Their findings revealed that today, about 12 out of every 1,000 births are twins—much higher than the 9.1 out of 1,000 recorded in the early 1980s.

世界中で双子の誕生率が
大きく増加していることが
統計から明らかになっています。
オランダのラドバウド大学、
英国のオックスフォード大学、
フランスの人口統計研究所の研究者による調査では、
2010年から2015年の間に
165か国のデータを集計。
その結果、現在は1,000回の出産あたり
約12回が双子であり、
1980年代初頭の9.1回と比べて
大幅に増えていることが確認されました。
The Role of Medical Advances
One major reason behind this increase is the advancement of reproductive medicine. Treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) often involve transferring multiple embryos to improve the chances of a successful pregnancy. This practice naturally raises the likelihood of twins compared to natural conception. However, as technology has advanced, doctors have been able to achieve high success rates even with fewer embryos, so the medical factor alone doesn’t fully explain the rise in twin births today.
医学の進歩と双子の関係
双子が増えている大きな要因の一つは、
不妊治療を含む医学技術の発展です。
特に体外受精では、
複数の胚を移植することで
出産の成功率を高める手法が取られてきました。
その結果、双子の発生率が
自然妊娠よりも高くなり、
全体的な統計を押し上げています。
ただし近年は技術の進歩により、
移植する胚の数を減らしても
妊娠の成功率を確保できるようになり、
医療的要因による双子の増加は
以前より少なくなってきています。
Higher Maternal Age, Higher Chance of Twins
Another key factor is the rising age of mothers. Across many countries, women are giving birth later in life, and studies show that older mothers are more likely to have twins. Research in the United States found that women over 35 are three times more likely to have twins if they are white, and four times more likely if they are Black, compared to younger mothers. This suggests that lifestyle changes and shifting family patterns are also contributing to the record-high rate of twin births we see today.
出産年齢の上昇がもう一つの理由
もう一つ見逃せない要因は、
出産年齢の上昇です。
欧米をはじめとした多くの国で、
女性が出産する年齢が高くなる傾向にあります。
研究によると、35歳以上で出産する女性は、
若い世代に比べて双子を授かる可能性が
大幅に高くなることが分かっています。
アメリカの調査では、白人女性で約3倍、
黒人女性ではなんと約4倍の確率で
双子が生まれているとの結果も出ており、
社会的なライフスタイルの変化が
統計に表れているといえるでしょう。
