カクレクマノミが
「縮んでる」ってどういうこと？
あの『ファインディング・ニモ』でおなじみの、
あの小さくてカラフルな魚たちが…
実際に体を短くして
生き延びようとしてるらしいんです。
最近の研究で、
気候変動による海洋熱波の影響で、
本当に「体長を縮めて」環境に
適応していることがわかったんだって。
今回は、そんな“ちいさな変化”の中に隠された、
大きなサバイバル戦略と魚社会のドラマについて、
ご紹介していきます。

体を縮ませている？！
You know the adorable clownfish from Finding Nemo? Well, it turns out they’re actually shrinking in real life—literally getting shorter to survive rising ocean temperatures. A study by Newcastle University tracked 134 clownfish in Papua New Guinea over five months and found that around 75% of them had shrunk in size. Not just lost weight—they physically became shorter. Wild, right?

おなじみのカクレクマノミ。
実は今、地球温暖化の影響で
“本当に体が縮んでいる”って
知ってましたか？
これはイギリス・ニューカッスル大学の
研究で明らかになった事実で、
パプアニューギニアの海で
134匹を5か月間観察した結果、
なんとそのうちの約75％が
体長を縮めていたというから驚き。
痩せたのではなく、
骨格ごと「短くなった」んだそうです。
【Not Just About Stress?】
This shrinking thing is the first time it’s been seen in coral reef fish, and it might not just be a stress response. Clownfish live in strict social hierarchies: the biggest fish becomes the female, the second biggest becomes the male, and the rest wait their turn. So body size is a big deal. Interestingly, the study found that when both members of a breeding pair shrank together, their survival chances improved. That suggests they might be shrinking not just to survive the heat, but to keep their social balance too.
【ただのストレス反応じゃない？】
この「縮む」という現象、
実はサンゴ礁に住む魚では
初めて記録されたもの。
しかもこれ、
単なる生理的な反応じゃない可能性があるんです。
カクレクマノミの群れには
厳格な序列があり、
一番大きい個体がメス、次がオス、
それ以下は未成熟のまま“順番待ち”。
だから体のサイズって、
彼らにとっては命にかかわる超重要な要素。
今回の研究では、
ペアの両方が一緒に縮むことで
生存率が上がる
傾向があることもわかっていて、
もしかしたら
「社会的なバランスを保つために縮んでる」のかも。
【Adapting by Getting Smaller】
Just like marine iguanas shrink by absorbing bone during stressful times, these clownfish seem to be literally reshaping themselves to cope with change. It’s kind of incredible—while we humans “shrink” emotionally under pressure, these little guys are shrinking physically to stay alive. Seeing how sensitively they respond to the environment makes you realize how fragile and fascinating marine life really is.
【縮むことで生き延びるという選択】
海イグアナがストレス時に
骨を再吸収して縮むように、
環境に合わせて“形そのものを変える”って、
生き物の進化って本当にすごい。
人間はストレスがかかると気持ちが縮こまるけど、
カクレクマノミたちは文字通り
「体」が縮むことで適応してるんですね。
地球の変化に対して、
こんなにも繊細に反応している小さな魚たちの姿に、
ちょっと感動してしまいました。
「Fascinating」は、
「とても興味深い」「魅力的な」「心を奪われるような」という意味の形容詞です！
