実はこれ、
単なる噂話ではないんです。
そう、いたるところに
ワニが生息するフロリダ州では
ワニ関連の事件も多く発生しています。
実際に、下水管内を調査していた
ロボット車両がワニに出くわすという事案も
2023年に発生していますが、
いったいフロリダの下水管には、
どんな動物が
どれくらい住んでいるのでしょうか？

35種の脊椎動物たち、
合計約3,800匹が発見されたのだそうです。

下水道は動物のすみか。
A research team from the University of Florida installed cameras at 39 spots in the stormwater drainage pipes of Gainesville in Alachua County, Florida, to explore the hidden underground ecosystem. They ended up recording a whopping 35 different species of vertebrates! The most frequently seen was raccoons, with bats coming in a close second. I mean, raccoons are cute, but they can be pretty dirty and even a bit fierce.

Just so you know, stormwater drainage systems are designed to quickly and efficiently flush out the huge amounts of rainwater that come during heavy downpours or storms. They’re totally different from the sanitary sewers that handle household and industrial wastewater, so there’s nothing to worry about. In fact, these systems work like natural waterways for the animals living there—crocodiles, for example, use them as convenient corridors to travel from one pond to another.
雨水下水道は、
大雨や嵐の際に発生した
大量の雨水を効率よく排出するために
設計された排水システムのことで、
人間の生活排水や工業廃水を
処理する汚水下水道とは異なりますので
そこは安心してほしいです。笑
そこに住む動物たちにとっては
自然の水路のように機能していて、
特にワニにとっては、
池から池へと移動する
便利な通路となっているんだって。
That said, even this underground hideout has its risks. There’s always the danger of someone accidentally falling into a drain, and larger animals like raccoons or otters might be at risk during maintenance work or sudden floods. Plus, the pipes can become a breeding ground for bacteria. It’s really important to design these systems with safe passage for wildlife—like installing escape ramps or secure entry and exit points—so that both animals and humans can coexist safely.
この地下の隠れ家にもリスクが存在します。
たとえば誤って排水口に落ちてしまったり、
アライグマやカワウソのような大型動物も、
人間の保守作業や突然の洪水によって
命を落とす危険性がありますよね。
また、下水道内は
細菌の温床となっているのも懸念点です。
「動物たちが安全に移動できる
設計を取り入れること」が大事。
たとえば、逃げ道となるランプの設置や
安全な出入り口を整備することで、
動物と人間の共存が目指せますね。
