中世の時祷書にある雪だるま
雪だるまの歴史は奥深い。
Snowmen actually have a pretty long history.
Their origins are said to date back to medieval Europe, and the oldest recorded example is from a book called The Book of Hours, written in 1380, which features a snow sculpture.
Back in those days, snow was a free and easily available material, so people enjoyed making snowmen as a form of art.
Snowmen became a symbol of winter in America during the late 19th to early 20th century.
This was partly thanks to works like Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, which portrayed snowmen as a key part of the winter atmosphere, solidifying their status as a seasonal icon.
By the way, Japanese snowmen usually have a simple two-tier design, while in Europe and America, they tend to have a three-tiered look with a distinct body shape.
This difference apparently comes down to the type of snow in each region, which affects how snowmen are made.
solidify は動詞で、「固める」「強固にする」「確立する」といった意味を持ちます。物理的な意味（固体にする）と比喩的な意味（計画や地位を固める）で使われます。
