Fabrice: 16-year-old hero
The quirks of fate in life: behind Fabrice Olinga's jubilation when he scored a goal at Balaídos (Celta de Vigo's ground), and thus became the youngest-ever goalscorer in the First Division, there had been a lot of difficulties to overcome.
Last Monday, Fabrice was weeping with frustration when he found out that his papers were not in order. The club had omitted to renew the Spanish residence permit for this boy who is barely 16 years old.
But everything changed when Málaga manager Manuel Pellegrini announced that he was including him in the squad for the match in Vigo against Celta. The club then sorted out his papers as a matter of urgency.
Fabrice arrived (from Cameroon) unexpectedly in Majorca in 2009, recommended by the Samuel Eto'o Foundation. During the two and a half years he spent on the island, Fabrice Olinga's performances were outstanding. His team won the Spanish junior competition and he was named as best player in it, and he was one year younger than the rest.
These performances took him to Málaga. In his new shirt and as a second-year junior, he was once again outstanding in the top Junior Division. The rest of the story we know, and certainly from now on, he will have no further problems with his papers. Málaga will waste no time in offering him his first contract of employment.
Fabrice's sudden emergence on the scene has certainly shaken up the world of football. His record for being youngest scorer has placed the young man from Cameroon on the front pages of all the main sports papers, and yet one week ago he was not even playing for Málaga's reserve team.
