バケーションといっても、オレにとっては遊びと仕事がいっしょである。
今回は3つの仕事をしにきた。
1.エッセイ集「秘伝書」のまとめ
2.ベリーベストアルバム12曲の歌詞を英訳
3.次のアルバム用の作曲
ボラカイに着いた翌日から取りかかったのが、歌詞の英訳だ。
ただ意味を翻訳するだけならかんたんだが、メロディーに合わせるのは至難の業だ。
メロディーはそれ自体に音節とアクセントがあり、そこに英語の歌詞を当てはめていく。
同じメロディーでも、英語の歌詞は日本語の1.5倍くらい単語が必要になる。
たとえば「ウレシパモシリ」の「わたし は 大地」は、「I am the Mother Earth」となる。
英語の歌を日本語に訳す時は単語を削る作業だが、日本語の歌を英語に訳す時は単語を増やす作業になる。
歌詞に新しい内容を足していくので、これは作者しかできない。
GoogleやWeblioなど複数の翻訳サイトを使うが、これがけっこうむちゃくちゃで、適切な表現を探すのがたいへんだ。
しかもメロディーに合わせるって、「針の穴にラクダを通す」(マルコの福音書)よりむずかしい。
高校で英語の成績はサイテーだったし、ストリートでおぼえた英語だから文法がでたらめだ。
