CHIROPRACTIC SPINAL MANIPULATION REDUCES HEADACHE FREQUENCY IN CHILDREN, NEW RCT SHOWS. The results of a randomized controlled trial [1], published in Chiropractic and Manual Therapies, has found that when compared to sham manipulation, spinal manipulation provided by chiropractors reduces frequency and has a greater perceived global effect.

The two-armed, single blinded randomized controlled trial, conducted in Denmark, involved 199 children aged 7-14 years, all of whom had suffered at least one headache per week for at least six months and had an identified musculoskeletal dysfunction.

All participants received information (oral and written) on how to reduce headaches. Children in the active treatment group received chiropractic spinal manipulation and children in the sham group received sham manipulation over a 4-month period.

The chiropractic spinal manipulation group experienced significantly fewer days with headaches and better global perceived effect than the sham group. No difference was identified in relation to the intensity of the headaches.

Only minor side effects were experienced in the spinal manipulation group. It was concluded on the basis of safety and effectiveness that chiropractic spinal manipulation be considered for children suffering recurrent headaches.
