あるサマーヒル卒業生
I was one of a few pupils at Summerhill who didn't attend lessons.
I chose not to attend because I was not interested in it (lesson).
わたしは、サマーヒルで授業に出席しない生徒の一人だった。
勉強には興味がないので授業に参加しないことにしていた。
I was very good at pottery, carpentry, those sorts of things.
I had a lot of confidence in my own ability to cope with the world through being able to do things with my hands.
勉強より陶芸や工作のほうがおもしろく、これはうまくなった。
自分の手でものづくりができる経験から、これなら世の中に出てもなんとかなるのではとの自信を覚えた。
So when I left Summer Hill at the age of 15, I could barely read or write and I had no real idea what I was going to do or I wanted to do.
一方では、机の上での勉強などしたことないので、15歳でサマーヒルを卒業しても読み書きがほとんどできず、また生活目標もやりたいことも見つからない状態だった。

After leaving Summerhill, he spent 5 years hitchhiking around the world twice.
After staying in Europe, he sold jeans in Turkey, blood in Kuwait, and worked in a kibbutz in Israel, and he was a film extra in India.
And he worked in the mine in Australia, and happened to come across the Carnival in Rio, then ... in California, went to prison in Canada, and finally ended up taking a part in the humanitarian movements in Pakistan and India.
In short, he visited over 90 countries without ever living through a single winter.
サマーヒル卒業後の彼は、5年間で世界中を2回、ヒッチハイクをした。
ヨーロッパを離れてからトルコでジーンズ売り、クウェートで売血、イスラエルのキブツで労働者、インドの映画にはエキストラ出演。
オーストラリアで鉱山労働者、リオではカーニバルに参加、カリフォルニアでは（？）し、カナダでは刑務所にも入り、最後にはパキスタンとインドの人道主義運動に参加。
要するに、90カ国以上の温い季節を旅して、寒い冬を過すことはなかった。
Every time I crossed the border, I would have to fill out a rather large form that required my name, my address, my age, and what language I spoke, what religion I was and et cetera.
And I learned to write these forms in such a way correctly...
国々の移動時には、多く項目を書類に書かなければならなかった。国境を越えるたびに、自分の名前、住所、年齢、話している言語、自分の宗教などを書類に記入する必要があった。
そのような時に正確なライティングを勉強した...

... it took me about three months to do them after I got a dictionary and I saw to read books...
... つまり、辞書をひきながらも本を読むなどして、約3か月後には読み書きができるようになった ...

... and eventually, he has now a degree in Economics and is an industrial consultant, giving advice in many countries in the third world. He is also increasingly involved in the management of community-based projects in Britain.

I think it took me a lot of confidence and I think Summerhill gave me a lot of strength to trust in my own judgment and trust my own feelings.
サマーヒル生活によって自分に自信がついた。ものごとを決めるのに確信がもてるようになり、自分の行動に自信がもてるようになった。
