The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory pound(s)18.99

The Red Queen follows the life of Lancastrian heiress Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII. By the age of 14, she has been married and widowed to Edward Tudor.

The result is that she spends the rest of her life pushing her beloved son into the spotlight, determined to make him King of England.

Margaret marries twice again, and ends up a wealthy woman. As a self-taught, powerful women, she becomes a key player in the

final battles of the Wars of the Roses. With this novel Gregory has triumphed again. Her research and deft writing skills have transformed a little-known, historical character into an endearing, spirited heroine, whose frustrations and sacrifices are richly rewarded.

The Search by Nora Roberts pound(s)12.99

Roberts latest venture is a blend of romance and drama - with a little crime/thriller sub-plot thrown into the mix. Fiona Bristow runs a canine rescue centre on the small island of Orcas, Washington State. Until this point, the dog trainer has placed men fairly low down on her list of priorities but a chance meeting with a roguish wood artist sets her emotional life on a turbulent boned corset course. Suddenly her world is flooded with drama, and the news that a copycat killer is on the loose only fuels the tension. Romantic drama at its best, with humour and suspense.

How The Girl Guides Won The War by Janie Hampton, pound(s)20

A century on from the founding of the Girl Guides, this book celebrates the 100th anniversary with a rich and enjoyable profile of the society's history and good works. Skilfully weaving the Guides' own stories, Janie Hampton explains their vital role in fitting gas masks or using skills earned through badge work. These quiet, smiling, friendly figures in blue, she says, set an

catholic Chelsea

example to the whole nation with their diligence. This is a well- researched, well-timed and, above all, thought-provoking book about a movement that has shaped so many of this country's young women.

Football may have been saved with Spain's victory over Germany. I should wait for Oracle Octopus to pick the winner. But for the life of the sport, one hopes the ole pirouetting elegance of the Spanish futbol, European cup champions, tops the methodical, heady (cabezada) precision of the Netherlands.

Earlier on Saturday, three-time champions Germany and two-time winner Uruguay clash in Port Elizabeth in a match that neither side wanted to be contesting - the playoff to decide third place. (Germany, wunderkinder team has the most youthful team players who proved to be a surprise semi-finalist).

The other surprise is Uruguay, a country of 3 million, a former football superpower, but has not been on the radar screen since after the 70's. Its capital Montevideo is mistaken by kids as a mountain full of TV antennas.

BTW, for breast-beating bragging rights, Spanish football may recall that, before we were seduced by basketball, a Pinoy was one of Spain's finest football stars... the Maradona, Ronaldinho, Messi of his time - Paulino Alcantara y Riestra.

If Spain wins, it may do much good for Philippine football. The Sorianos and Ugarte field will rejoice... and perhaps give a shot in the arm to our street football and Jim Libiran's film HapiLand, which is about the sport in dumpsite.

We hope for maximum media coverage for World Cup finals... even if UAAP 73rd basketball season kicks off the same weekend. After all, it isn't yet Ateneo vs. La Salle at Araneta Coliseum.
