The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits;---on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone, the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanch'd land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.
今宵の海は穏やかだ
潮は満ち、月はドーバー海峡に
美しくかかっている； フランス海岸の灯火のまたたきは
何時しか消えた、イギリスの断崖は静かな湾内で
広びろとかすかに見えている。
窓辺に出ると、夜風が爽やかだ。
海と月光に輝く陸地が接する
長い波打ち際から
波が打ち寄せ打ち返し飛沫を立てるたびに
小石のこすれあう音が聞こえる。
打ち寄せる波が沖の大波に戻るたびに
その音は、ゆっくと震える律動で

エーゲ海でこの波音を聞き、
人生は悲しみという潮の干満だと
感じた；われわれも
遠く隔たった北海のほとりで
その波音を聞いてある思いを感ずる。
The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furl'd.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.
かつては信仰の海にも
潮が満ちており、地球をめぐる海岸に沿って
たたまれた帯のように輝いて横たわっていた。
しかし今聞こえる波音は
憂いに満ちた、長い、ひき波の唸り。
その波音は夜風の音へ、この世界に広がる
荒れ果てた崖や裸の岩へと戻って行くのだ。
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.
愛する人よ、お互いに
忠実でいよう；この世は
多様で、美しく、鮮やかな夢の国に思われるが、
実のところ、喜びもなく、愛もなく、光もない。
確かさも、平和も、苦しみに対する救いもないのだ。
我々の今いる場所は、錯綜する闘争と逃亡の
警報に追い回され、夜間には無知な軍隊が衝突する
暗黒の大地なのだ。
