Nestled in the city of Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima Jingu is the Ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of the former Osumi Province and one of the oldest and most revered Shinto shrines in southern Japan. Originally known as Osumi Sho-Hachimangu Shrine, it has been a sacred place of worship for well over a thousand years and has enjoyed the patronage of emperors, powerful samurai families, and generations of local people.
The shrine is dedicated to Hoori-no-Mikoto, also known as Yamasachihiko (the Lucky Hunter Prince), and his wife Toyotama-hime-no-Mikoto, the daughter of the Sea God.
