Kamigamo Shrine (Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine)

Kamigamo Shrine is the Ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of Yamashiro Province,

located in northern Kyoto.

It is one of the oldest shrines in Japan and, together with Shimogamo Shrine,

is designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

The enshrined deity is Kamo Wakeikazuchi-no-Okami,

the god of thunder and divine protection.

The shrine is widely revered for blessings

such as protection from misfortune, warding off evil, and good fortune.

The shrine is easily accessible from Kyoto Station by city bus to “Kamigamo Jinja-mae,”

or from Kitaoji and Kitayama subway stations by bus.

Visitors can enjoy the famous local sweet Yakimochi,

a grilled rice cake filled with sweet bean paste.

Popular souvenirs include amulets and charms featuring the sacred Aoi (hollyhock) leaves,

which are closely associated with the shrine and the famous Aoi Festival.

Surrounded by nature and rich history,

Kamigamo Shrine offers a peaceful glimpse into Kyoto’s ancient spiritual heritage.
