. And while the new Ford Mustang GT has new and enhanced equipment sure to set performance car hearts' aflutter--the Mustang GT 5.0 has improved suspension, driving enthusiast-developed electric power steering and an optional Brembo brake package--it's the new five-liter 412-horsepower engine that will rock the world of pony car--and particularly Mustang--enthusiasts.
That's up, for anyone keeping score , from 315 hp in the 4.6-liter 2010 Mustang GT.
According to information released by Ford today, the new 5.0L engine bears only passing resemblance to anything that's come before, with the engine block the same...but very different. However, "The heart of the engine is in the breathing," said Mike Harrison in an early December briefing of journalists, indicating that the increase in displacement was only incidental to the increase in performance.
Indeed, "critical"-- to use Ford's word--to the project was the Ti-VCT valve actuation. Standing for "twin independent variable camshaft timing," the system allows Ford engineers to optimize intake and exhaust timing for the various needs of different throttle positions and engine rpm, maximizin engine power and economy while minimizing emissions of the 2011 Ford Mustang 5.0L V-8. According to Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of global powertrain development, "Ti-VCT is a win-win-win technology."
While the variable cam timing of exhaust as well as intake valve timing makes power tuning the Mustang 5.0L's easier--if more complex--a significant development in Ti-VCT is the cam torque actuation of the camshaft rotation. Traditional cam timing relies on oil pressure to advance and retard--make the valve events earlier or later relative to piston position--the camshafts. The new Ti-VCT system relies on oil pressure to push the camshaft in one direction only, allowing the inertia of the camshaft--which is "free" because it's going to exist on its own--to turn the camshaft in the other direction. This reduces mechanical complexity--only one oil pressure valve is needed instead of two--and it also reduces load on the oil pump which decreases drag on the engine. The technology was first used on the new engine developed for the 2011 Mustang V-6
.
A seemingly insignificant change helped optimize intake manifold design. The alternator, traditionally located in the valley of Ford V-8 engines, was evicted to take compromise out of engineering better airflow into the engine, getting it out of the way of the new composite intake manifold.
The layout of the valve train was changed, too, with the camshafts "tilted outwards" instead of being centered above the cylinders, a "why didn't anyone think of that before" change that allows improved intake and exhaust tract routing for the four-valve per cylinder aluminum cylinder heads.

Sure to annoy aftermarket suppliers is the homegrown tubular exhaust headers that come standard on the Mustang 5.0L engine. Ford ditched the old cast iron manifolds, durable and relatively inexpensive to make, in favor of welded-up tubular headers. The prototype for the headers, designed to separate exhaust pulses as much as possible and improve exhaust gas flow, were actually welded up in the home workshop of an engine team analyst.
The 2011 Mustang 5.0-liter engine gets "oil squirters" for the first time. Long employed by turbocharged engines to cool piston face temperatures by directing a stream of engine oil on the bottom side of the piston, the squirters do the same for the high compression 5.0L engine. A side benefit, according to Harrison, is that it warms up oil temperature faster when the engine is cold.
Because many Ford Mustang enthusiasts use their cars in track day events, the Ford engine designers made sure that the aluminum engine block allowed oil drainback from the cylinder heads. Design that doesn't consider lateral forces of high speed cornering can cause pooling of engine oil on the sides of the block, starving the engine of oil even when the engine has enough of the black slippery stuff. The new Mustang 5.0L won't do that.
The Mustang's 5.0L block is also designed so that windage--the crankshaft hitting oil suspended in crankcase air--is reduced, reducing the parasitic drag of the crankshaft hitting the oil and allowing the oil to flow back into the oil pan where it belongs.
The oil pan of the 5.0L Mustang GT is stamped steel but is a deep sump design with increased oil capacity and baffling to keep the engine oil around the oil pump pickup during high cornering forces. The added oil capacity also allowed Ford to increase oil change recommendation to 10,000 miles.

Steve Saleen announced today that he and his new company SMS (Steve’s initials) will design, engineer, certify and manufacture an all-new family of ultra-high performance Mustangs. Steve’s 25 year legacy with the Mustang will continue into the next quarter century with the launch of his 2010 Signature Series SMS 460 Mustangs.
The introduction of the SMS T460 TMustangs keeps Steve Saleen in the saddle with the model that made him famous as a manufacturer of high performance sports cars. Since leaving his former company, Saleen, Inc., Steve has entered exciting new territory with SMS. The first products to wear the new badge - the SMS 570 Challenger and SMS 570X Challenger, will begin shipping in late January.
“After 25 years of rich Mustang heritage, I am excited to begin work on the 2010 model” explains Steve. “Ford has hit the spot with the excellent new Mustang package and has provided me with an outstanding starting point. “The SMS 460 Mustangs will be truly world class performance vehicles and they will be available though the entire Ford dealer network!”
Hinting at the character of his latest creation, Steve says, “We are carrying over a host of performance features and innovations from my SMS Twenty Fifth Anniversary model, which is a stunning performer and an aesthetic beauty!”
The fully-certified and street-legal SMS 460 Mustangs are based on the exciting 2010 Mustang GT platform and will feature an SMS Supercharged 4.6L engine with power ratings from 475 to over 650 horsepower! Both models will feature extensive design refinements and performance innovations, including the patented SMS Red Butterfly Induction™ hood and a full compliment of SMS ultra-high performance components. Look for all-new and upgraded drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics, tires, wheels and interior.
“The 2010 Mustang already has an exciting and sculptural exterior, as well as new, up-scale interior,” notes Phil Frank, SMS Chief Creative Officer. “The SMS 460 Mustangs will evolve our design DNA in a more aggressive and aerodynamic direction.”
Each of these limited edition vehicles will be hand signed by Steve Saleen as part of the SMS Signature Series product line, complete with unique badges and graphics. Annual production volume will be restricted, adding to the exclusivity of ownership. Contracts are issued on a first-come first-served basis and deposits are now being accepted for early production numbers scheduled for build in the second quarter of 2009.
