6.4L HEMI Goodness For 2011 Dodge Challenger

The HEMI is back! A 6.4-liter (392 cubic inch) motor will be finding its way under the hood of select 2011 Dodge Challenger models. That “392” name is important, because it is the size of the HEMI engine introduced in 1957 and used in limited Chrysler and Imperial products.

The first HEMI, a 5.4-liter (354 cubic inch) motor, made its debut in 1951. 60 years later HEMI goodness is turned up a notch as this new engine produces more power than the 6.1-liter (370 cubic inches) most recently used. The larger HEMI is rated at 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, giving the Challenger more off the line power for this iconic rear-wheel-drive sport coupe.

Power & Performance

Chrysler says that handling for this model has been upgraded as well, often a sore point for these vehicles which are fast, but pale in comparison to the handling found in European sport sedans. The automaker’s engineers recalibrated the suspension system for better balance, steering and cornering. For example, this model gains “quuicker steering ratios and new negative camber settings” for improved cornering.

Chrysler plans to build just 1,492 Challenger SRT8 392 Inaugural Edition models, each of which will include exclusive content. The Dodge Challenger is built at its Brampton Assembly Plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, and will arrive in Dodge showrooms before the end of 2010.

Special Touches

Two color schemes are available: Deep Water Blue with standard Stone White stripes or Bright White Clear Coat with standard Viper Blue stripes. Standard 20-inch SRT-exclusive wheels featuring a polished face and satin black painted pockets, 392 badges, MOPAR quad exhaust tips, and larger front splitter and integrated front fender spats.

On the inside, customers will find Smooth Pearl White leather-trimmed seats and dual blue stripes accented by unique blue stitching with an embroidered “392” located just below the headrest. Serialized “Inaugural Edition 392 HEMI” dash plaque, showing the sequential build number from 1 to 1,492, will be present.

Other Stuff

Chrysler has not announced pricing for this model which will certainly be high, reflecting its limited build and special engine. For Challenger enthusiasts with deep pockets, they’ll likely see past the price to plunk down the funds to procure their heart’s desire.
