■ 古代マヤ文明の暦の一つ「長期暦」が5125年の区切りを迎えた21日、世界各地で「終末騒ぎ」が起こりました。中国では、終末論に便乗して、実在しない「ノアの方舟」の乗船券を売りさばいて数百万円を稼ぐネット業者も現れました。こうした事態を重視した当局は、終末論を流布させたとされるキリスト教系団体「全能神」の摘発に乗り出し、メンバー1000人以上が逮捕されました。マヤ暦の終わりを題材にして人類滅亡を描いたハリウッド映画「2012」のヒットも、中国で終末論が広まる原因となりました。
■ ヨーロッパでも、終末論を信じる人々が各地のパワースポットに殺到しました。「滅亡の日には安全」と言われていたトルコの人口570人のシリンス村には、各地から約6万人が押し寄せました。「UFOが救いに来る」との噂の流れたフランスのブルガッシュ村では、警察と消防が100人体制で警戒する騒ぎになりました。
■ グァテマラでは、ジャングルの中にあるマヤ文明最大の遺跡ティカルに7000人以上が集まりました。「マヤ暦の終わり」を格好の商機と捉えた地元政府や旅行業者がキャンペーンを展開した結果でしたが、一部の観光客が遺跡によじ登り、神殿を損傷させる騒ぎも起こりました。こちらは「騒ぎ」というより「お祭り」という感じでしょうか。ちなみに日本では、キリスト教人口が低いせいもあってか、「終末騒ぎ」はほとんど盛り上がらなかったようです。（Yas）
