【Malala Speech At U.N.】
スピーチ。
昨年（2012年）10月9日、パキスタンのタリバーンに頭部を銃撃されたものの、奇跡的に回復した同国の人権活動家、マララ・ユサフザイ Malala Yousafzai さんが、2013年7月12日、16歳の誕生日に国連で「まず、子供たちへの教育が必要」とスピーチした。マララさんは、従来から女性に教育をと訴えてきたがそれが女性に対し教育を受けさせない考え方のタリバーンの反発をかい銃撃された。マララさんは1997年7月12日生まれ。この7月12日を国連は「マララ・デイ」とし、彼女を迎えた。スピーチは約17分、1500ワード強。日本語にすると4500～5000文字。しっかりとした言葉で教育の必要性を力説した。
いくつも示唆に富む言葉が語られ、そのたびに会場からは拍手が巻き起こった。僕はたまたま家に帰りテレビをつけたらCNNでこの生中継をやっていて思わず釘付けになった。とても感動的だったので、全文を探してみた。英語全文は下記に。

「何千人もの人々がテロリストたちに殺され、何百万人の人々が怪我を負わされています。私もそんなひとりです。そんな多くの中の一人の女子として私はここに立ち上がります。私は自分自身のためではなく、すべての女の子、男の子たちのために声をあげます。叫ぶのではなく、声をあげます」
「声なき声のために。権利のために戦っている人たちのために。
平和に生きる権利のために。
尊厳を持って扱われる権利のために。
機会の平等の権利のために。
教育を受ける権利のために」（声をあげます）
「みなさん、2012年10月9日、タリバーンは私の頭の左側を銃で撃ちました。私の友達も撃ちました。彼らは銃弾が私を黙らせ、私たちが目的をあきらめ、思いを変えるだろうと考えました。しかし、次のこと以外何も変わりませんでした。（変わったことといえば）弱さ、恐怖、絶望が消えうせたことです。その代わり（銃撃によって）、強さ、力、勇気が新たに生まれました。私は（以前と変わらぬ）同じマララです。私の目的は何も変わりません。私の希望も夢も何ひとつたりとも変わりません」
「みなさん、私は誰に対しても敵視するものではありません。タリバーンに対する個人的な復讐や他のテロリスト・グループに対して何かを言おうというものでもありません。私はここに、ただすべての子供たちが教育を受けられる権利を主張しに来ているだけです。私はあらゆる過激派、特にタリバーンの息子、娘たちにも教育を受けてもらいたいと思っています」
「私は私を撃ったタリバーンさえ憎みません。目の前に彼が立ち、わが手に銃があったとしても、私は彼を撃ちません。これは私が慈悲の預言者であるマハメドやイエスキリスト、仏陀から学んだ慈悲の心ゆえのものです。これは私がマーティン・ルーサー・キング、ネルソン・マンデラ、マハメド・アリ・ジンナらから受け継いでいる「変革の伝説」のたまものです。これは私がガンジー、カーン（インド独立のための運動家）、マザー・テレサらから学んだ非暴力の哲学です。そして私の母、父から学んだ『（あらゆる者を）許すこと』ゆえです。そうしたものすべてから、『すべてを平和に』『みなを愛しましょう』と私のソウル(魂)が私に語りかけてくるのです」
「親愛なる姉妹、兄弟のみなさん。漆黒の暗闇にいるとき、私たちは光の重要性を痛感します。沈黙しているとき、声をあげることの大切さを知ります。同じように、パキスタン北部のスワトにおいて、私たちは銃を見たとき、ペンと本の重要さを認識するのです」
「賢者が言う『ペンは剣よりも強し』は真実です。過激派は本とペンを恐れています。教育の力が彼らを恐れさせるのです。彼らは女性を恐れています。女性の声の力を彼らは恐れています。だから彼らはまったく無実の14名の学生をクエッタで殺害したのです。だから、彼らはプゥートゥーンで女性教師やポリオ研究者を殺害したのです。だから、彼らは毎日学校を爆破するのです。彼らは変革を恐れているのです。私たちが社会にもたらそうとしている平等におびえているのです」
「ジャーナリストに『なぜタリバーンは教育に反対なのか？』と聞かれた少年がいました。その少年は実に簡単にそこにあった一冊の本を指差して答えたのです。『タリバーンは本に書かれていることが読めずに理解できないからなんだ』 彼らが考える神とは小さな保守的な人間で、学校に行くという理由だけで女の子たちを地獄に落とす、そんな神なのです。テロリストたちはイスラムやパシュトゥーン（パシュトゥーン族＝アフガニスタン東部からパキスタン西部の民族）の名の下に彼らだけの利益を求め、神を悪用しているにすぎないのです」
「パキスタンは平和を愛する民主的な国です。パシュトゥーン族は娘・息子に教育を受けさせようとしています。イスラムも平和で思いやりもあり兄弟愛にみちた宗教です。イスラムもあらゆる子供に教育を受ける権利があるだけでなく、それは義務であり責任であると言っています」
「国連事務総長、平和は教育に必須です。世界の多くの地域において、特にパキスタンやアフガニスタンなどで、テロリズム、戦争、紛争が子供たちを学校に行かせるとき足かせとなっています。私たちはこんな戦争にもうこりごりなのです。女性や子供たちは世界の多くの地域で様々な方法で犠牲になっています。インドでは罪のない貧しい子供たちが児童就労の犠牲になっています」
「ナイジェリアでは多くの学校が破壊されています。アフガニスタンの人々は何十年もの間、過激派の影響にさいなまされています。若い女の子は児童就労で家事をやらされ、若くして結婚を強制されています」
「貧困、無知、不正義、人種差別、基本的人権の剥奪は男性女性にかかわらず直面している大きな問題です」
「今日、私たちは世界のリーダーたちに平和と繁栄のために戦略的にその方針を変えていただきたいと訴えます。
私たちは世界のリーダーたちにあらゆる平和交渉は女性と子供の権利を必ず守っていただけるようお願いします。女性の尊厳や権利に反する交渉は決して受け入れられません。
私たちはすべての世界中の政府にあらゆる子供たちが無償の教育を受けられるように望みます。
私たちはすべての政府に子供を暴力から守るためテロリズムと暴力と戦うようお願いします」
「私たちはすべての子供たちに明るい未来をもたらすための学校と教育を求めます。誰も私たちを止めることはできません。私たちは、自分たちの権利のために声を上げ、私たちの声を通して変革を生み出します。私たちは自分たちの言葉の力、力強さを信じなければなりません。私たちの言葉は世界を変革することができるのです」
「無知（非識字）、貧困、テロリズムに対して世界規模で戦いましょう。私たちに本とペンを持たせてください。それこそが、もっとも強力な武器なのです」
「ひとりの子供、ひとりの教師、一本のペン、一冊の本、それが世界を変えることができるのです」

Honourable UN Secretary General Mr Ban Ki-moon, Respected President General Assembly Vuk Jeremic, Honourable UN envoy for Global education Mr Gordon Brown, Respected elders and my dear brothers and sisters; ( )
Today, it is an honour for me to be speaking again after a long time. Being here with such honourable people is a great moment in my life. And it is honor for me today I wearing a shawl of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed.
I don't know where to begin my speech. I don't know what people would be expecting me to say. But first of all, thank you to God for whom we all are equal and thank you to every person who has prayed for my fast recovery and a new life.
I cannot believe how much love people have shown me. I have received thousands of good wish cards and gifts from all over the world. Thank you to all of them. Thank you to the children whose innocent words encouraged me. Thank you to my elders whose prayers strengthened me.
I would like to thank my nurses, doctors and the staff of the hospitals in Pakistan and the UK and the UAE government who have helped me to get better and recover my strength. I fully support Mr. Ban Ki-moon the Secretary-General in his Global Education First Initiative and the work of the UN Special Envoy Mr. Gordon Brown. Respected President General Assembly Vuk Jeremic. And I thank them both for the leadership they continue to give. They continue to inspire all of us to action.
Dear brothers and sisters, do you remember one thing? Malala day is not my day. Today is the day of every woman, every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights. There are hundreds of Human rights activists and social workers who are not only speaking for their rights, but who are struggling to achieve their goals of peace, education, and equality. Thousands of people have been killed by the terrorists and millions have been injured. I am just one of them.
So here I stand....so here I stand, one girl among many.
I speak ― not for myself, but for those without voice can be heard.
Those who have fought for their rights.
Their right to live in peace.
Their right to be treated with (with, with) dignity.
Their right to equality of opportunity.
Their right to be educated.
Dear Friends, on the 9th of October 2012, the Taliban shot me on the left side of my forehead. They shot my friends too. They thought that the bullets would silence us. But they failed. And then, out of that silence came, thousands of voices.
The terrorists thought that they would change my aims and stop our ambitions but nothing changed in my life except this: Weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born. (ovation)
I am the same Malala. My ambitions are the same. My hopes are the same. My dreams are the same.
Dear sisters and brothers, I am not against anyone. Neither am I here to speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban or any other terrorists group. I am here to speak up for the right of education of every child. (ovation)
I want education for the sons and the daughters of Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists.
I do not even hate the Talib who shot me. Even if there is a gun in my hand and he stands in front of me. I would not shoot him. This is the compassion that I have learnt from Muhammad-the prophet of mercy, Jesus christ and Lord Buddha.
This is the legacy of change that I have inherited from Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. (ovation)
This is the philosophy of non-violence that I have learnt from Gandhi Jee, Bacha Khan and Mother Teresa. And this is the forgiveness that I have learnt from my father and from my mother. (ovation)
This is what my soul is telling me, be peaceful and love everyone.
Dear sisters and brothers, we realise the importance of light when we see darkness. We realise the importance of our voice when we are silenced. In the same way, when we were in Swat, the north of Pakistan, we realised the importance of pens and books when we saw the guns.
The wise saying, “The pen is mightier than sword" was true. The extremists were and they are afraid of books and pens. The power of education frightens them. They are afraid of women. The power of the voice of women frightens them. And that is why they killed 14 innocent students in the recent attack in Quetta. And that is why they killed female teachers and polio workers in Khyber Pukhtoon Khwa. That is why they are blasting schools every day. Because they were and they are afraid of change, afraid of the equality that we will bring into our society.
I remember that there was a boy in our school who was asked by a journalist, “Why are the Taliban against education?" He answered very simply. By pointing to his book he said, “A Talib doesn't know what is written inside this book." They think that God is a tiny, little conservative being who would send girls to the hell just because of going to school. The terrorists are misusing the name of Islam and Pashtun society for their own personal benefits. (ovation)
Pakistan is peace-loving democratic country. Pashtuns want education for their daughters and sons. And Islam is a religion of peace, humanity and brotherhood. Islam says that it is not only each child's right to get education, rather it is their duty and responsibility.
Honourable Secretary General, peace is necessary for education. In many parts of the world especially Pakistan and Afghanistan; terrorism, wars and conflicts stop children to go to their schools. We are really tired of these wars.
Women and children are suffering in many parts of the world in many ways. In India, innocent and poor children are victims of child labour.
Many schools have been destroyed in Nigeria. People in Afghanistan have been affected by the hurdles of extremism for decades. Young girls have to do domestic child labour and are forced to get married at early age.
Poverty, ignorance, injustice, racism and the deprivation of basic rights are the main problems faced by both men and women.
Dear fellows, today I am focusing on women's rights and girls' education because they are suffering the most. There was a time when women social activists asked men to stand up for their rights. But, this time, we will do it by ourselves. (ovation)
I am not telling men to step away from speaking for women's rights rather I am focusing on women to be independent to fight for themselves.
Dear sisters and brothers, now it's time to speak up.
So today, we call upon the world leaders to change their strategic policies in favour of peace and prosperity.
We call upon the world leaders that all the peace deals must protect women and children's rights. A deal that goes against the dignity of women and their rights is unacceptable. (ovation)
We call upon all governments to ensure free compulsory education all over the world for every child. (ovation)
We call upon all governments to fight against terrorism and violence, to protect children from brutality and harm.
We call upon the developed nations to support the expansion of educational opportunities for girls in the developing world.
We call upon all communities to be tolerant ― to reject prejudice based on cast, creed, sect, color, religion or gender. To ensure freedom and equality for women so that they can flourish. We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.
We call upon our sisters around the world to be brave ― to embrace the strength within themselves and realise their full potential.
Dear brothers and sisters, we want schools and education for every child's bright future.
We will continue our journey to our destination of peace and education for everyone.
No one can stop us. We will speak for our rights and we will bring change through our voice.
We must believe in the power and the strength of our words. Our words can change the whole world.
Because we are all together, united for the cause of education. And if we want to achieve our goal, then let us empower ourselves with the weapon of knowledge and let us shield ourselves with unity and togetherness.
Dear brothers and sisters, we must not forget that millions of people are suffering from poverty, injustice and ignorance. We must not forget that millions of children are out of their schools. We must not forget that our sisters and brothers are waiting for a bright peaceful future.
So let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism and let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons.
One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.
Education is the only solution. Education First.
